4 man scramble in PGA tour event.

This is a fun discussion. You and I may be similar in talent, but the difference is: You think you're not really too far off from a tour player, and I know my play today is a mile and a half away from a tour player. To win a tour event, you're probably playing to like a +10 that week, or something sick like that. If this scramble team had one of those magical fun days, maybe, but a regular day, no way. Anyhow, thanks for the conversation. We will simply never know...

Do you know that you are also a mile and a half away from understanding math on the level of a college undergrad in basic statistics and probability? It sounds like that would be news to you. 4 chances......is a much bigger deal than you are aware of. A 3 handicaps best shot is good enough to shoot in the 50s. He just can't be consistent enough. But with 4 chances? 4 chances at every putt? Seeing the line? Going at pins 4 times? You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about in this thread. Tour players never average 62 for a whole tournament. That would be 40 under. How often have you seen -40 on the leaderboard. That's what this scramble would average.

This thread has really opened my eyes on people's misunderstanding of both golf and variance.

Your average TOUR pro in an event hits several poor shots over the course of 72 holes. Just because the tv coverage follows the guys in good form, doesn't mean that there aren't dozens of others out there who are fighting swing problems, and hacking it around. A scramble team WILL NOT have any loose shots. A 'bad' shot for a scramble team would be hitting a GIR in regulation from 200 yds. The TOUR median for penalty strokes per round is right around 0.4 so over the course of 4 rounds, your scramble team automatically gains 1.5 shots on the field for the tournament because a scramble is not taking any penalty shots. That edge is even bigger if the course is even more penal (rough to wedge out of, etc).

Yes, exactly, thank you.

Clearly there are folks who really think this scramble team will be amazing. I'm certainly not talking about the average pro. We're talking about the magical week a winning pro has when they win. When those guys go super low, they are hitting shots far above the caliber of any of the scramble player's potentials. And we all know that scramble teams can slip. Put the pressure of a pro event on them and slipping becomes more likely. These factors make this match far from a done deal...

The pressure of winning a pro event unravels most tour players as well. Even the winner generally just holds on down the stretch.

Well the pressure of a pro event wont unravel all four sub scratch golfers on every shot I can guarantee you that.

I'm pretty sure the two plus caps in this group could muster the courage to scrape together some awesome shots over four days.

4 cracks at an up and down the rare time they don't have a good look at birdie? Chances are :::this team::: in the OP's post gets more wins on the tour than bogeys on a weekend.

Wow, you are a true master of the dunning kruger effect and really have some backwards notions in your head about this. Average pro? Nobody is talking about that. The winning score at a tour event is usually around 20 under. The scramble group describe can do that in their sleep. They'll be more like 40 under. So it's not going to be close most weeks.

You keep saying when a tour player goes low they are hitting shots far above the low handicappers potential. Wow, you really have no idea how tour players go low and you certainly have never played in a scramble with all players being around scratch. Low 60s rounds on tour aren't from amazing shots, they are from consistently hitting iron shots close and making putts. When Jim Furyk shot 58 he didn't hit one shot that couldn't easily be replicated in that scramble group.

Played another scramble at a challenging course a couple of days ago. Foursome was made up of 3 single digit players and a beginner. We got to -9 on the round.

Played today in a 4-man scramble on a 6500yd course , not super challenging but not a cakewalk. Myself, a 5.4 index, a 8 index and a 15 index. We shot -12 and did not have a par putt over a foot.

Obviously it's not a tour course, i just see stuff like this and think that 4 A players would just nuke a tour course though

Srixon ZX 15 w/PX Hzrdus Red 70

Titleist Jet Black 54/60 with PX LZ 6.0

The scramble team mentioned by OP wins every tournament running away. By way of comparison on course length, granted not set up for a tour event, I did a 4 man scramble with indexes of 2,3,6 & 7 and shot 65 at Ross Bridge in Birmingham from the tips [8100 yards].

I've played a few courses set up for PGA tour events and scramble group mentioned by the OP would be shooting in the low 60's every round without a doubt.

That's not a average scramble team, lol. but with that team, easy make cuts, will definitely win some. you're never shooting over 70 even at the toughest set ups, especially if you play it smart (get a ball in play to start, etc). if anything, tough set ups probably are an advantage compared to the field, because you rarely miss a FIR or GIR and almost never have a penalty stroke. and the times you do you have 4 competent chances to get get it up and down.

having 3 attempts from decent putters and one very good putter easily > excellent putter. even just giving a very good putter 3 good reads before he putts gets him towards that excellent putter range.

This is basically what I was thinking. They may never go super low, but they should pretty much never be over par either.
