Bethpage Black or Trump Ferry Point 2017

Having played Bethpage Black many times, which course is worth playing this summer if you had to pick 1 and money being no factor. Trump Ferry point or Bethpage Black?

Bethpage Black no question. Ferry Point is nice but only has 1-2 signature holes. Didn't really care for it much. I'd only go back if it's free or extremely discounted price. It's 15 mins away from me.

For cost and a pure golfing standpoint, I would always choose Bethpage Black over Ferry Point but FP was honestly a nice surprise. I enjoyed the course and the layout but I also didn't pay for the round which also might have made me enjoy it a little more =)

Just got back from Ferry Point

I am very glad I finally played it but I doubt I would ever go back unless someone was picking up the tab.

From here on out, it will be Bethpage Black for me if and when I get the rare wife and child free night.

Agreed. It's one of those courses, since it's close by that you'll have to try. But after that, it loses its appeal unless it doesn't cost anything. hahaha.

Thinking of playing Ferry Point in a week or so. About time I play the track, despite the heavy price tag.

Played Ferry Point today, and happy I did. The course is really nice, with the added perk that it blows the other NYC courses out of the water and then some. The entire day felt like playing at a private club. The fairways are decently wide but plenty of bunkers. The greens were a little tricky but rolled true. The views on some holes are incredible, either the Whitestone Bridge of Manhattan skyline frame a lot of shots. I played the Gold Tees, which are just shy of 6900, and it definitely plays long into the wind. A few par 3s played over 200, and some par 5s were close to 600.

 

Compared to Black, they're totally different courses. Black is tough from a shear yardage and rough standpoint. You have to drive the ball long and straight. FP is tough because of the wind and the bunkering. Black is a classic, a perfect course from the golden age of golf architecture. FP is a modern layout of a links course, lots of man made dunes and bunkering, but positioned in ways that make you think your way around the course. It was a fun layout and definitely suitable for a large range of handicaps. My fear with modern designs is that they are penal for the sake of being penal, but I felt this layout was solid.

 

When you factor in price, nothing beats Bethpage Black for a NYS resident. If you're out of state and paying $150+ for Black, then FP is also a very solid option. I left Ferry Point immediately planning to play Black to see how it would stand up. Black is a classic, but FP is a solid option as well.

Pretty cool, we teed off at 10 so the eclipse was starting around the 16th hole. When we walked off 18 we out on our eclipse glasses and geeked out for a few minutes before lunch and beers.

Played Black today, about 10 days after playing Ferry Point. They are very different golf courses, with Ferry Point being much more playable if you avoid the fescue. The rough at Black is brutal right now, if you land in it you have to basically punch a wedge out. Ferry Point is a little wider off the tee. I paid $70 today with a $5 reservation fee. I don't mind walking and think its a fantastic deal for what it is.

 

Head to head, I would put Black first, but that's considering the big price difference too.

They aren't even in the same ballpark. Ferry Point isn't a good golf course. Too manufactured. Bethpage is one of the toughest courses in the country.

Have to disagree with you there. I found Ferry Point to be a visually amazing experience with impeccable conditioning, views, and service. I found the layout to be challenging but fair, the greens receptive but challenging; overall an excellent golf experience. When you say it's "too manufactured", you realize it's built on a piece of property that was a garbage dump, right?

 

In terms of Bethpage being one of the toughest courses in the country; for me that's not what makes it better or worse than FP. If you played both from the tips, yes, Black is harder. I'd go so far as to say Bethpage Red is a better layout and more fun than Black, but that's just me. I've only played them each 6 or 8 times and Ferry Point twice.

 

FP and BP are tough to compare; they have different histories, different designs, and target audiences. BP is a state park, so let's not forget that the cost disparity is huge between the two for those of us who are NY residents, but offset a bit by the jump in cost for out-of-state players at BP. I think they are both excellent golf courses, just very different. If you don't get off the tee well at BP, it will be a long day. FP seemed more generous off the tee but tougher around the greens.

There is a lot of truth to this post. FP is more forgiving, harder around the greens but wide fairways. Bethpage will kill you if you're not straight off the tee, but the greens are straightforward. Hard to compare unless you're looking at cost. Totally different styles and target audience.

I just played the Black this past Tuesday and it was in excellent condition. Greens were rolling great. Agree with above post btw about Bethpage's fairly benign greens....they are pretty easy to putt on. The challenge is getting to the greens.
