My beliefs are along the side of one of the guys above...why would you attempt to hit a straight ball? It only leaves you with half the room to miss--and WE ALL MISS WITH THE DRIVER OFTEN...even Tiger. If you're hitting a draw, line up down the right from the left tee area, and you have 100% of the fairway to 'miss' to...if you're hitting a cut, line up down the left and the same is true. Just my 2 cents...

On the contrary guys, I completely agree with this.

 

If you want to hit a fade, you want to be aiming down the left side so you've got the whole of the fairway to play with and vice versa for a draw.

 

If you aim down the middle of the fairway and you hit a fade or a draw then you've only got half of the fairway to aim at.

 

so what happens if you miss to the side you are aiming...? just take your medecine with the OB or play from the trees...?

There will always be a 'worst case scenario' but you can't play with that in your mind.

 

If you're trying to hit a fade, aim down the left side of the fairway. The worst you should be thinking is that you're going to hit it straight, in which case you'll still find the left hand side of the fairway. If you're trying to hit a fade, you shouldn't be thinking "what if I hook it".

 

Everyone's game is different mate but this works for me.

I'm not sure it's intentional, but I end up 'working' my driver most days due to a lack of straightness. It's a definite plus at my home course to be able to work the ball both ways.

 

60% of the time I have either a not-terribly-reliable draw or an ugly hook and cannot hit it straight or with a fade.

30% of the time I'm hitting it straight and can draw it on demand.

10% of the time I can work it any way I want and feel like Jack f'n Nicklaus.

 

Thanks to the driver, I now have a wide variety of well-practiced chip out, punch, chop and stinger shots at my disposal.

I typically just try to hit the straightest shot a hole will let me. If that means trying to hit small draws and fades to deal with wind I will TRY it. Doesn't always work though.

 

I do like to hit larger draws and fades (who are we kidding, I mean slices) when I am in dogleg or hazard areas.
