There's a lady I always run into in the lunch room whom I always exchange witty banter with as we vie for microwave space.

I just walked by and she was having witty banter with a different dude.

I got irrationally jealous.

It's not clear to me that Cousins wanted out for sure. It seems like he wanted a fair market, long term offer. He wants to test the market and see what he can get. The Redskins never offered him anything near fair market. They low balled him at every turn.

I think if they came to him with a 27-8 mill per year, 3 years guaranteed, 5 year deal, he'd have to consider it. But they're to cheap to do it and unwilling to admit they screwed this whole thing up.

I love this. Tee boxes are artificial. They shouldn't exist.

Huh? Tee boxes are no more artificial than an entire golf course. Stop being silly.

Golf courses need a hole, period.

Everything else is artificial. We don't need to make it worse by making tee boxes. Mow down an area and stick markers in the ground.

That kind of soft thinking leads to wanting relief from divots.

Original rules of golf :

#1 Tee it up within a club length of the hole.

#2 Your tee must be upon the ground.

I think #2 was because someone was levitating his ball with his mind.

Then we agree ---- it's all artificial. Why not rag on the existence of bunkers, fairways, greens, etc... I better NEVER hear you complain about a condition of a course again. As long as there's a regulation cup in the ground, it's all good.

I don't complain about conditions.

But, you're getting into "fundamental golf" territory here.

Water, bunkers, different grass heights are natural elements of the game. We've "articificalized" them, but they are natural to the game.

When I say get rid of tee boxes, I'm just talking about finding a wide swath of land somewhere near the previous green, mowing it and putting in markers.

And, also, "mowing" a tee box is not artificial. You're allowed to f*** around on a tee all you want. If they didn't mow them for us, you'd have golfers doing their own mowing. And, even though I'm not in favor of level tee boxes, a similar (not exact, but similar) argument can be made for having level tee boxes.

This, this right here, is for fancy lads who want golf to be exclusive. . .

In an absolute and concrete sense, it's all artificial. There is no natural golf hole. Yeah, there are degrees of artificiality. I am a golf course elitist, I guess, because I like well-maintained courses. I doesn't need to be Augusta, but I don't like uneven tee boxes, patchy fairways, and bumpy greens. Neither do the masses, or they wouldn't be that way. And, no, according to the rules of golf one could not mow their own area of the tee box (if I'm wrong on this, I'll be bringing piles of dirt and sod so I can even up tee boxes, and put down fluffy grass where it's hard and bare, or muddy, on Par 3s).

I like natural waste areas. I am not a fan of artificial bodies of water (less those used as part of irrigation --- that makes sense to me).

Anyhow, my original point is that teeing areas aren't natural, and nether are golf courses or even the game of golf. It's all man-made.

NM, I screwed up the explanation of the Nicklaus course - still sounds kind of cool for a vacation/resort course.

===

Baha Mar's 'Freeform teeing'

Unlike most modern designs that can feature five different yardages for players of all skill levels, Royal Blue offers just one set of tees, albeit with a catch – those tees change every day.

Each day, Deiro and Director of Golf Sean Cracraft come up with a custom design, moving tee markers forwards, backwards and even off to the sides, mixing up yardages and altering angles. Perhaps the greatest example of the difference between the front and back teeing areas can be found at the par-4 fourth, which can play either from driveable 270 or from a monstrous 472 with a lengthy carry over water. Likewise, on a given day, you might be able to get home in two at Nos. 9 or 13, or they might play as full three-shot par 5s.

Regardless of where the markers are on each hole, the staff will end up with a total yardage somewhere between 6,250 and 6,500 yards each day, creating a mix of shorter and longer holes. The club also keeps a close eye on repeat players on the tee sheet, so that it can offer a new experience each day.

"I've been setting up golf courses for 35 years, and this is the most fun I've ever had doing it,” says Cracraft. “Other resorts have multiple courses. We have one, but we can make it feel like you're playing different courses."

Juniors – or anyone looking to play a shorter yardage – can utilize the conch tees set up in the fairways.

Love that, DC. Love.

To PQ:

You can do a lot on a teeing ground.

I don't believe you are allowed to "build a stance" on the teeing ground, but you are allowed to create or eliminate irregularities of surface on the teeing ground. If you had a tee box with long grass on it, I believe you could rip out a swath of grass until you had a bare spot.

And, no, I won't concede that in an absolute, concrete sense it's all artificial. In the first days of golf, there were two guys standing in a field trying to get a ball into a hole across a "natural" landscape. Maybe a sheep pasture. Shoot, the holes might not even have been artificial at that point. If you're not going to call playing across a "found" landscape natural, then nothing that has occurred in history after Adam strapped a fig leaf over his junk is natural.

I'm at full salute after going back to look at those pictures. It doesn't even matter that they charge an obnoxious amount of money for it - I can not wait to go play #2 again. It's a special beast.

I've done the "resort" and "off-resort" PH trips and I think both have plusses and minuses.

But I cant wait to play #4 again after Gil Hanse finishes with it. Already thought it was a great track but after seeing the "before/after" sketches he did...should be awesome.

I don't care about staying on the resort again. That S is expensive.

I'd be interested to play some of the other, older courses on the property.

#8 is supposed to be one of the best, and I wasn't exactly over the moon about it.

Playing #4 after Hanse makes it over would be fun.

The only thing I really care substantially about is going to the resort property for again is to play #2. Assuming I have the means, I'd like to play it a handful more times before I kick the bucket. I don't care that it's expensive. I think it's a really special golf course.

There is just so much better value staying and playing off resort. IMO courses like Mid Pines and Pine Needles blow a track like #8 out of the water. Not that they're necessarily cheap, but they're less than you're paying to stay and play #8.

My first job out of school was actually doing stuff like that.

Remember back in 1999/2000 when everyone in the world came out of college, worked at a tech start up, got ground floor shares of a start-up company, then were worth tens of millions of dollars when the company went public?

Good.

Remember the ones that were working on high-res face mapping technology that went nowhere and they burned through investors money while playing Quake 3 over the Local Area Network and the Angel investor got kicked out of his house and was sleeping in the office?

No?

Well, that one was us.

Yeah it may be expensive but you definitely get your money's worth - so I guess its all relative. I think our package price was $400/nt for the Carolina, golf and three meals a day - breakfast buffet at the Carolina and pretty good dinners IIRC. It was an upcharge to play #2 - maybe $150 - but overall I didn't feel like we overpaid.
