MD/DC/VA Golfers - This One Goes to Eleven

pinehurst 2018 recap (before it's actually happened):

 

- endless brought 5 pairs of shoes for 5 rounds. everyone made fun of him, but secretly man-crushed on his outfit game.

- when we sat down on friday, kent refused to buy dinner for everyone again, even though no one expected him to. that's getting out in front of it.

- DT almost killed someone with a golf ball. sadly, it wasn't on the pinehurst trip because he's not going. even more sad, it was himself that almost lost an eye.

- i made everyone wait on a every par 3.

- by day 3, no one could make a full turn. lots of crying.

- after pulling a shot long and right, pq tomahawked his wedge so hard it went grip deep.

- i forgot to bring tees and was scrounging for them all weekend. no one offered to give me any.

- dormie's staff was salty. very salty. and they didn't have our reservation. F that place to death.

- isringerhausen had the best poker face. he won all the monies.

- i brought a foam roller and never used it.

On hot days during the m-g I will switch shoes and socks for the 3rd 9 of the day. The cart guys look at me funny, but nothing like fresh feet to help you get by that last 2.5 hour round.

Well... wanted to play 9 at black rock. Currently on vacation. Course is, of course, packed. Get told by the guy that he would contact me and should be 30 minutes to tee off. 75 minutes and about 4 trios later no contact so I left.

 

How do you lose a sleeve of balls without playing? Forfeit one to the idiotic ranger who doesn’t do his job and hit the other 2 with your 4-wood down the range.

Daily handicap revisions, taking account of the course and weather conditions calculation

In handicap discussions in the Rules forum, I've talked about that idea with other people. They already do it in some other places. They call it the "Daily Scratch Rating" or something.

 

The basic idea is that if you have a whole bunch of golfers go out and play a course one day, you should expect to see a particular range of scores. If the weather and course conditions are really bad that day, maybe all the scores are bumped up by two strokes. So, that 72.1 rating really played like a 74.1 that day. Very easy to do. So, your 75 doesn't go into the books as a 2.5 but rather a .7.

 

I think that the second part of what 2More wrote means that if you were a 2 a year ago, but now you're a 5, there's more flexibility to adjust you.

 

That, combined with DSR, combined with 8/20 is going to drop everyone, probably.

 

So do they calculate the fudge-factor based on scores posted for a specific day, in comparison to course handicaps of the players posting the scores?

 

Could your differential be adjusted after you post it, based on subsequent scores posted for that course and day?

 

Does this also mean that differentials could be adjusted higher, if for whatever reason golfers are posting lower than expected rounds for a given day?

 

I wonder if you have courses that seem to be rated such that they consistently produce higher or lower differentials than average for golfers. I think you'd certainly find out, if certain courses were having to get more frequent/substantial differential adjustments.

What's even the point of adding the complexity of modifying your differential based on the other differentials that day? Seems like it's adding a lot of complexity and confusion for little payoff. You don't know what your differential is until you enter it, the data goes out on the internet, the day ends, then it does some math on other entered scores for the day, and tells you the following day?

 

Sorry, not worth it for me. Some days are good for scoring and some aren't. They average out. I'm not aware of anyone sandbagging by only playing on days where the weather sucks and scores are tough. 113/Slope * (Score - Rating) [edited to fix equation] is good enough for me. Simple equation; instant feedback; anyone can do it on the back of an envelope.

I believe the answers are yes, yes and yes.

 

Right now courses are rated based on "typical playing conditions" (I think that's the wording.)

 

It's always been a question of whether some courses are rated high or low. This is a very easy question to answer if the USGA was more forthcoming with their data.

 

Obviously daily ratings aren't perfect. Conditions could change from the morning to the afternoon, but it's still an improvement, imo.

 

It's also not just conditions, but tee box positions and hole positions can make a difference on how hard a course plays on a given day.

Could your differential theoretically change at any point, should somebody post a round after the date in question? Not that one score should make or break the "daily rating" but I wonder what the average "time to post" is for rounds, currently. What does the timeline look like for the majority of scores for a particular date and course to get posted?

I was wondering about the same thing.

 

For instance, PRMC used to post our scores in a batch. Sometimes the guy would take two weeks to do if. Something like that could affect this.

 

I think overall, its just the USGA saying, "look, we have the data. Why not do it?"

 

They also said they're doing daily adjustments. I like that. Waiting every two weeks is from a time when people did handicaps by hand.
