TP y-cutter vs Spin Milled

Intresting pic sheds new light
I may just have missed something but I was reading the new TGW catalog today and I noticed a diagram of the y-cutter's grooves, they were a cross between standard grooves and Spin Milled esque grooves and definitely not in the Y shape. They claim 25% more groove volume while I believe Spin Milleds are close to 35%? Now throughout my online golf forum career, y-cutters have been said to have Y shaped grooves. What do the grooves actually look like? A soft edged box or a Y? And if they are actual soft edged boxes then how can one yell until they are red in the face saying that y-cutters spin the ball more than Spin Milleds? I have brought a topic up on another forum which I will call ( you know better :pimp:) stating that I had been on a launch monitor comparing the two and the Spin Milled spun the ball slightly more than a y-cutter. I was banned for a month.

Sorry about the rant I am just confused and mad at Taylormade for using hype to sell products. Then again I guess its not that new of an idea.

The Y designation simply comes from many different groove configurations named for letters of the alphabet....there are A, B, C, etc...the whole shaped like a Y thing is bogus....I smell class action lawsuit.....

Hi my first post on your wonderful site.

Exactly correct, this is the 25th groove configuration hence the reference to the Y ie the 25th letter of the alphabet. The tour version are more expensive because of the grooving process, it is all computer generated and the groove tool used is changed every time 3 grooves are finished a quite expensive process so it passes down the line to consumers.

Whatever you guys are talking about, I think that cleveland's cg10 wedges out perform any wedge out there. May I remind that these wedges are actually forged while the Vokey's and Taylormade's are cast. Granted, many steps have been taken to try to get the feel better on these cast wedges but there is no way they will ever compare to a classic forged wedge.

Form Forging is not true forging by any stretch of the imagination. It is a cross between casting and forging, while enabling a forged feel at a cast price. Cleveland forging? that would be the day. Albeit I have heard rumours a few of their irons are traditionally forged. not the wedges.

God Bless

Firstly the tool change per 3 grooves is crock. Machine tooling is made from hardened steel and the wedges themselves are not, so why would a machine tool go blunt ?

Anyway, we've heard that they are laser cut, karate chopped outby alien Shaolin monks and so on, it's all balls!

Secondly, Golfer Junior, I'd have the same argument here before, all being equal, spacing, width etc, a pure box shaped tour groove will impart more spin than radiused, softened, or drafted grooves ever will.

The guys blowing smoke up your a** about the Y cutter are all drunk on Koolaid.

Measure the grooves with feeler gauges and some vernier calipers to see if the tour/retail Y cutter is the same as a tour/retail Spin Milled, I don't have these four wedges so I couldn't tell you. The milling marks only affect the ball on short chips around the green..I.e the force of friction becomes irrelevent on fuller shots where the grooves do all of the work.

I could give rat's rearend on which wedge spins more or not, all I care about is a wedge that'll save me strokes. Give me a wedge that can get my shots in the hole even with topspin, I'll take it.

I could name several wedges that I felt spins more than Y-cutter or Vokey SM and I believe excessive spin is a killer for anyone's short game.

The name of Y-Cutter is named for the groove design on TM tour wedges last year or so. They are good wedges but I never got comfortable with those soles.
