Looking for the name of an older blade iron set - need help

Recommended Posts

I posted this in the main equipment forum, completely forgetting about this section of GolfWRX...so perhaps y'all can help me out as well:

Many years ago, I worked at a smaller, independent golf shop that took in trades. One of the used iron sets we had was an older set of lefty blade irons, and for the life of me, I can't remember who made them.

The key was that they were named after someone...like Ben Hogan or Sam Snead irons are. But the name was not a household name.

And this store was in Canada...so perhaps they're lesser known because they were Canadian-made?

My google searches have netted nothing.

Electroleum-

Three names first come to mind- all Wilson names from the 1930s....

Might they have been the Wilson Ben Richter matched set of LH irons?

Is it possible they were the Willie Ogg "Ogg Mented" irons?

Willie Hoare had some Wood models named after him- The Wilson Willie Hoare Driver was one of the first LH models.

The fourth name is Bruce Herd. The Herd family is from the UK, and their name is on the British Open trophy.

Bruce Herd had a number of "Signature" clubs made by MacGregor and sold in the North, and in the South.

I think they were newer than 1930s. I'm thinking probably 1950's-70's

To almost every LH golfer older than 60, Bob Charles is a household name. Charles had a number of signature sets from Dunlop.

Here is what you wrote-

"Many years ago, I worked at a smaller, independent golf shop that took in trades. One of the used iron sets we had was an older set of lefty blade irons, and for the life of me, I can't remember who made them.

You can remember they were older LH blade irons, but not how old.

You can't remember the name, but know it wasn't a household name.

NOTE- Most people who got their names on LH golf clubs were household names.

Golfcraft was a Canadian company that made LH equipment. They made the Continental woods and irons in LH.

Don Whitt was a MacGregor staffer who won a PGA Tour Event in the '50s, and had a number of LH clubs made.

Just saw a LH set of Spalding Bruce Devlin irons at a GW.

No photos?

Good Luck.

rex -

Bob Charles is a household name to many RH golfers of a certain age too, however I didn't notice the OP referring to himself as LH, and if he's not of a certain age, Bob Charles would be as household a name as Kel Nagle, Tony Lema, Art Wall Jnr, and other players from Charie Bob's era ;-)

Golfcraft? a couple of their Staffers were Lloyd Mangrum and Al Besselink, maybe they were available in LH models?

Hope this helps :-)

I have a mint set of Dunlop Bob Charles "Professional" blades. They were owned by my Uncle.

They are left handed. I would consider selling them to the right person.

The images are not of the set that I have.

Atrayn-

New Zealander Bob Charles was the first LH Professional golfer to win a major championship- The 1963 British Open.

It is highly unlikely you would find Charles' name on a RH set of irons. The photos are of the Dunlop Bob Charles Professional set from the early 1970s.

You say the iron set you have is mint, but the images you show are not of the iron set you have?

OK....

Did you actually read my post?

I know who the freak Bob Charles is for God's sake....and that he is left handed.

I also stated....."The images are not of the set that I have."

I also stated... "They are left handed."

I posted the images as a favor to the OP so he could see potentially if these are what he was talking about.

If by chance you want me to post the images of the irons & woods I have, I will do so, however you will have to wait until tomorrow as I am at work right now.

Let me know.

Edit - in case you are wondering my Uncle was left handed he died of cancer when I was 16. I inherited them. I am also right handed....

Edit #2 - I'm also 53 years old. That's why they are mint. IF you can do the math, because right now I wonder.....

....damn why am I so pissed.....??

OK!!!!

Atrayn-

My apologies.

The Original Post (OP)deals with the following

"Many years ago, I worked at a smaller, independent golf shop that took in trades.

No name, no year...

No wonder.

Your response to the OP question was the following-

I have a mint set of Dunlop Bob Charles "Professional" blades. They were owned by my Uncle.

They are left handed.

I would consider selling them to the right person.

And then, you post photos of a LH set of blade irons- Dunlop Bob Charles Professional irons, 2-9, with Pitching Wedge.

But when you wrote- "The images are not of the set that I have."

That sets off a red flag for some, and others as well.

This is called hijacking a thread. You assume the OP is about the name or the irons.

In your direct response to my post, you were most condescending, and made assumptions which are not true.

Yes, I read your post. I happen to play left handed.

Am sure that you mean well by trying to sell your Uncle's irons, but...

If it is your intent to sell something, then-

Yes, you should post photos of your mint LH set of irons in it's own BST thread, not in this one.

PS- As to the intermediate post-

Stan Thompson is also a household name, and the "Ginty" clubs were made both RH and LH.

Stan Leonard was a Canadian Professional.

Wrong, quit assuming. Accusing me of trying to hijack a post is pure BS.

In fact, I offered only in case the OP was looking for this specific set. If I really wanted to sell them I would have put them on the BST or Ebay years ago.

Again, I only posted the images to try and help the OP try and identify what he was trying to find out. You assumed otherwise.

My mistake was to not explain that apparently sufficient enough for you. Sorry.

This set has very sentimental value to me and why I have kept them all these years. I was feeling generous so I offered them up. Please forgive me.

This now solidifies my original idea to put them in a shadowbox on my wall to remember the uncle I never got to play with.

Thank you for that!

Is that directed at me, rex?

Stan THOMPSON is the man responsible for the Ginty.

The OP considered Hogan and Snead household names, rightfully so. Stan Leonard probably isn't quite on that level in most households, yours being a notable exception.

Stan Leonard's name was also stamped on a number of store line clubs sold by Sears. Here's a nice example.

I have no idea who made clubs for Sears. I've never seen any information on that. Probably changed a number of times over time.

i don't see any left handed ones on Ebay at the moment, but considering Stan was Canadian I have to believe they were made. Lots of left handed golfers in Canada.

Just checked my LH Ginty- It is Stan Thompson.

PS- Went through some of those early sets, and have another household name which has appeared on RH and LH Golf clubs.

Fluffy-

Yes, and Charles even used Spalding Custom Persimmon Woods in the mid '80s that were on the heavy swingweight side (E 1)

After the '60s, Spalding didn't have many LH models to choose from in America, and gradually phased them out- One Left Handed golfer, John Hayes, played with Spalding at the 1976 JP McCarthy PAL Tournament in the Detroit area. A childhood friend was a Spalding rep, and he blatantly told me RHO when it came to those Top Flite Forged, and Elite MV2 models you found in the bags of Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Dave Stockton, Al Geiberger, Greg Norman, and Lee Trevino. There were some Top Flite 3000 models in the '90s, but you weren't getting the Custom Grinds....RHO.

When they had the grinders In their heyday, Spalding did make some pretty good LH Wedges, but they're not as revered as Wilson.

Maybe JC Higgins? My brother had a set of JC Higgins clubs. Only set I've ever personally seen (and I still have them), but they are out there. They were a Sears brand until 1961.

:offtopic2: I know J C Higgins was on a lot of Sears sporting goods back in the day. My first shotgun was a J C Higgins .410 single shot. In fact come to think of it I never knew who J C Higgins was to begin with. Maybe some one can educate me on that

Stu. An actual person. From Wikipedia:

The brand name, J. C. Higgins, was based on a real person, John Higgins who was a Sears employee. He moved from his birth country of Ireland to the United States in his late teens and began working for Sears in 1898. He spent his entire working career with Sears and was Vice President for the company for a period of time. He was actually born with no middle name but the Sears Co. presented the idea of labeling their sporting good line with his name and saw it more presentable labeling the brand as J.C. Higgins. He worked with the company until his retirement as head bookkeeper in 1930. Higgins died in 1950. His expertise in sporting goods or sports is unknown.

My first firearm, given to me by my father, was a J. C. Higgins .22 bolt action. Still have it stored away downstairs, haven't shot it in 40+ years.

Sorry but Golfcraft was not Canadian as they were based out of California. MacGregor produced a Gordie Howe series of irons in LH and RH that were made for the old Eatons department store. Campbell of Canada made LH Arnold Palmer forged irons back in the 1960s. LH Hogan irons would have had the Slazenger name on the blade.

Could it be Ted Williams? I know he had a wide-ranging endorsement deal with Sears to sell all kinds of non-baseball related sporting goods (from shotguns to tennis racquets) and I have seen a few sets of clubs with his name on them. I seem to recall a loose LH iron or two in the misc. rack at a local Goodwill a few months back.

Rgk-

You are correct- My apologies.

In 1955, US Golfcraft purchased two Canadian companies making golf clubs in British Columbia-Pro Made and Royal Scot, under their umbrella.

There are a few LH Golfcraft ProMade persimmon woods from this period.

We also found LH Golfcraft Continental persimmon woods and irons with fiberglass shafts.
