Might be moving to Nashville, help

As the thread states we might be moving to Nashville and would love any info. Wife has her 4th interview coming up. She would be working in the Downtown area I believe.

We are open to living pretty much most places, commute time would be a factor though. I work at a course as a greenskeeper and would love to keep doing that.

What areas should we avoid looking at? Also any experiences with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital?

Nashville is nice. I live in Murfreesboro, but I no longer have the commute to the city. East side is on the resurgence. City golf is very good.

Have lived here for almost 8 years - things have changed quite a bit as the city is growing at a rapid pace. Traffic is becoming more and more of a problem - (no where near Atlanta bad - but trending more towards that everyday) so knowing where work is and the associated commute is a factor. Lots of golf - but most of the better options are private. As for Vanderbilt Children's Hospital - I have had experiences with one of my Sons - very favorable reviews. PM me if you would like more detail.

Having lived many places - it is a great place to live and raise children.

All I can say is live as close to where you work as possible. I moved from Dallas to Nashville, and found the Nashville traffic to be much worse than Dallas traffic. I lived south of Nashville (in Smyrna) and commuted to downtown Nashville. The drive to and from work was miserable. On the plus side, if you like Italian food, Coco's Italian restaurant is the best on the planet.

I’m one of the few that is born and raised here. 36 years old. My only time i spent away was college at Baylor University. I love me some NASHVILLE but boy had it changed/grown a ton. Yes grew up in Brentwood. (The ghetto of Brentwood, if you will, lol. I’m no silver spooner). And now live in Nolensville. I actually am disappointed in golf here unless you join a club. Birmingham and Atlanta have so much more options in public golf.

That said, I love old fort and Indian Hills has come along with new greens. The private golf, if you join or know people is great. But I love to play a lot more than I get invited or play somewhere.

She’d be working off the 40 just north of the airport with the possibility of a job downtown (1 job would be if they get a MLS team). Is Mt Juliet a good area?

Private is an option but would prefer it to be a club and not just golf for the kiddo. Anyone with experience working at the private clubs?

The best deal for a course IMO is Gaylord Springs. It’s public but membership is pretty cheap for unlimited golf, all things considered.

Vanderbilt Children's as a career choice or a patient? My daughter was and still is a patient (cancer survivor). She had major surgery at 14 months old then chemo therapy to boot. She turns 4 today actually. Couldn't have been at a nicer facility. I live in southern Williamson County, with morning traffic its a solid hour ride in.

Congrats on her being cancer free.

Patient. Our son is 5 and was born with a random medical condition. Long story short he was born with 1 kidney and it is about 5% the size of a normal one. He had a kidney transplant 2 years ago. If you saw him you’d have no clue but like 11 surgeries over his 1st 5 years.

Unfortunately public golf in Nashville leaves a lot to desired; however east of the airport is the Hermitage, imho the best public courses in Nashville. Lots of good living choices in Mt. Juliet. The Donelson area is starting to get "hot" now, which sounds to be very close to where your wife will be working. Some new restraunts are opening, and the Real estate market is starting to escalate. Vanderbilt hospital is first class, you don't have to worry about that.

Feel free to PM me if you have some more questions.

Just for reference I have lived here since I was 6 and am now 30 years young married with a 2 year old. I have lived the entire time in Mt. Juliet and to say the least, it is one of the best cities in middle Tennessee. There is tons of new shopping (Providence Mt Juliet), new construction neighborhoods, and best of all is the commute (compared to all other interstates flowing into Nashville) is the best by far. With that being said MJ is growing at a tremendous rate and is the "new area to live" cause you can find a little bit of country still if you want and or be in a new construction neighborhood with a not so huge city feel. Also Mt Juliet is between 2 of the best lakes in middle Tennessee and is very active on the water in summer around here with either lake being 5 minute drive from most houses in MJ, Lebanon area. I do live in Lebanon now casue I have to be a certain distance from my work, which is the connecting city to Mt Juliet on the east side of MJ. Areas to stay away from is mainly anything around Smyrna, Murfreesboro, La Vergne, Clarksville, due to many reasons, (PM IF YOU WANNA KNOW WHY) and most will agree! I know I am a little biased but MJ and Lebaon are great areas to be in and have tons to do for families and such. Fanklin, Cool Springs, and Brentwood are beautiful areas also but price of housing is prime out there compared to rest of surrounding areas. As far as Golf clubs are concerned around Mj is Five Oaks. Course needs attention but I believe they are looking to restaff this next year and whip it in shape but its a great club with tennis, golf, pool, and clubhouse. That's the only club in MJ and Lebanon are besides Lebanon country club which is older and only 9 holes but does have restraunt and pool. There is many golf courses within 5 to 40 minute drive of MJ too.Pm me if you have questions and or want my number to chat some more.

We also have one of the best Hockey teams in the league and the game environment and the experience is literally second to none. Its completely off the charts at Preds games, family will be hooked. althoght this is coming from a hockey family and season ticket holders. And I will keep your son and family in our prayers.

Thanks a lot guys means a lot. Kiddo is doing awesome right now but just have to keep on top of it for the rest of his life. Not to get political but if something happens with insurance his cheap medication is $1500 a month but with ins it is like $65, so the pre existing condition thing scares me.

We have close friends who are member or something at Gaylord Springs? They also have season tickets to the Preds and got our son a signed puck and stick when he was recovering and he is now a HUGE Preds fan. We will be visiting in early January for her 4th interview. So wish us luck. Then the wife would go out to work and the kid and I would stay here until his school year is over.

From looking around it seems like $460k (what we would get for our house here opens us up to a lot of neighborhoods. Am I missing something?

Well I will keep praying for your boy and hope everything with the insurance works out. Gaylord springs is a phenomenal course and very well kept. I usually play at the Hermitage 95% of the time since it offers 2 courses and both are very different. love the Presidents course at The Hermiatge.

About the housing, I don't know where you live and can't comment on the housing market where you are at. Not to get personal but a year and half ago, I paid 300k for my house its brand new, new construction all brick, 2600 sq ft, 4 beds, 3 baths, plus bonus room, 2 car garage, all stainless, maple floors and cabinets, granite counter tops, 8" crown molding through out, on 1/3rd acre in Wilson county which is MJ & Lebanon to compare for you. Don't know where you live but pricing in Tennessee is pretty good compared to most but it is booming right now and prices have gone up more in my neighborhood by about $25k-$40K for same house. You will be able to find a great house in almost any are you wanna live in for your said price. Glad to hear little guy is a Preds fan!!!

The earlier the better. I mean, nothing crazy will happen in a month or so, but prices have climbed considerably in the last 3-5 years. I live in Arrington/Nolensville now. I’m hoping to make about $150k on my house in March and have been in it for 5 years this upcoming Feb.
