Are there any conforming wedges with a similar shape to the original PM Callaway grind?

Way back when roger Cleveland first started up with Callaway they released the X-Tour wedge, which was also Callaway's first wedge the the insane mack daddy grooves...the ones where you would be cleaning ball rather than grass out of the grooves. The mack daddy wedges only came in a PM grind....I loved that grind, in particular the way the leading edge sat close to the ground, but at the same time you could expose more bounce by opening the face. I'm wondering if there is anything more recent with the same grind and a relatively normal head shape?

I know I could always just get the current PM model, but I really really hate the way the wedge sets up with the rounded leading edge. The original X tour had a much squarer leading edge, similar to the current MD forged, or the Taylormade Milled Grinds.

The only thing I've seen that comes close is the Ping Glide ES grind - I have a 58 on the way to test out too.

Perhaps forking out the cash for a custom wedge is the way to go? Or could I take a wedge with a full grind and have that applied to it?

That's easy...the Ping Eye 2 gorge wedges...that's what those wedges were based from and Phil used the originals in the past.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

They’re not really a “Normal” head shape though, they look like the current PM Grind that he said he didn’t like.

I hadn't thought of the ATV grind. I might have to dig around for an old Tour Preferred model as they can be had fairly cheaply these days.

I had the original ATV wedges and they worked great, I just didn’t like the ugly tail they had. The newer models since then with the ATV Grind look much better. :)

X Tour wedge is USGA legal until 2024. Pro tours and high level am tournaments excepted. Why not grab a few off ebay and send them to The Iron Factory for refurbishment. They will come back like new.

Ping G400 Max driver w/Aldila Rogue 125 Silver
Ping G425 5 wood & hybrid
Ping G30 irons w/Recoil 95

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95
Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110
Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

An interesting proposition. Could potentially just get some vintage ones and refinish myself - wouldn't even need to regroove as those grooves are plenty sharp enough for me. Time for some searching!

I found a 58 and 50 on a local site here in canada for around $70 US for the pair, both vintage finish with tidy looking grooves. Very tempting....trying to decide if I would go all in and get them refinished in chrome (which I prefer), or just tidy up the vintage myself. I love the duller finish you get from blasting, hard to replicate in a DIY finish. Just a matter of deciding if I need another project!

If you want to try outside the box, try the Omen Prophecy wedges.

I lived in Scottsdale when the Mack Daddy was released. That thing was dirty. Super tight firm lies, could zip it from 20yds, I just shed a tear. Glad I got golf balls for free back then. Been switching between Ping ES and Mizuno T7s for a couple years. Ping ES looked a bit strange to me at first, but I got over that quickly. I like them much more then the current PM Grind.

I just pulled the trigger on a Glide 58* ES in decent shape for $40, figured that is a good place to start, and I can compare directly to the 58 SS grind that I currently use. I do prefer the shape of the standard glide - makes me wonder why both the Ping ES and the Callaway PM grind both have such an ugly headshape?! What is it about that grind that suits a rounded leading edge and a funny headshape.
