My pro says I am "over the top" - am I?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have problems with hooking and pulls to the left - with all clubs but worst is my driver. I have tried to fixed it myself with different kind of handsy manipulations but with no luck of course - so I finally decided to go to a local pro. He looked at my swing (no trackman) where I shot some pulls and hooks and then said this was an easy fix. He said my problem is that I come over the top - with out-to-in club path - with a closed club face and therefor create a pull and/or hook my shots. His advice was to create a more in-to-out swing path and the problem will be solved with a nice draw.

After the lesson I went home and recorded my video to see my over-the-top move but when I look at this video I can't really see I am over the top - for me It looks like I am coming from the inside. But then - I am not an expert - so I would like to here from you guys - am I over the top as he says? If not - why do you think I am pulling and hooking my shots?

Here is my swing with driver:'

Thanks

Thomas

Look closer at the alignment of your feet. You have a closed stance compared to the swing path of the club. Also, watch the clubhead as it begins back. It starts outside. Even though you don’t feel or look like you are coming over the top, in effect, you are. Check the ball position too. There is a good chance it may be too far back in your stance. You have a good start to a real good swing. Listen to your pro. I think he will get you going in the right path.

This guy has had too many brews.. your not over the top. Your coming too in to out and flipping the face closed through impact

Your swing might look different than it did before the lesson. And the feeling he was trying to get you to do is very different than over-the-top, so maybe it was over exaggeration in explanation, which some folks need. The way the hands are going through could use some work, maybe that's next lesson...

Thanks! When you say the way the hands are going down needs some work - what do you mean by that? Under plane, stuck and flipping through impact?

Extremely doubtful the pro got him swinging naturally too in to out from over the top in one lesson. Over the top would be a feel to actually fix his miss.

Hi Redjeep - yes you are right - this is my natural swing I used before I went to the pro... I found this article from Monty where he talks about "late flipper" - when I read it it sounds and kind of looks like that is me. Do you agree?

Thanks all for your feedback - here is an update.

So I went out to the driving range today and started with swinging more in-to-out as my local pro suggested but that did not help - my shots went left of left so that only made it worse.

I then followed some of the tips mentioned here (and Monty's article about late flippers) where I tried to correct my alignment, come less in-to-out and trying to reduce my flip at impact. So my swing thoughts were actually over-the-top with the club and trust my rotation to square the face. This was easier said than done but in the end I got something that anyway looked a lot different from yesterday and I did not get those ugly hook shots when I got it right.

Here is my new swing (of the day) where I hit it good. Is this better? Am I still flipping? Sorry for the probably dumb questions but I am not very good at analysing golf swings.

Here is a comparison from yesterday in the downswing. Left=today, Right=yesterday

Thanks

Thomas

Looks a lot better to me, ball flight better?

:yahoo: thanks! Yes the ball flight was more compressed and my bad shots not that bad as before - some a little right and some a little left but not super left of left as before... It feels very strange to not actively release with my hands and trust my rotation to square my club face.

Just a quick followup - I went to range yesterday and tested this new "more-over-the-top" swing with Trackman - my ball speed with driver has increased from 150 mph to 163 mph (my top was 165 mph) and my big hooks are gone. These are crazy numbers for me - so big thanks!

What path does Trackman say your club head is on ?

OTT ... nope

I'd say be less inside out and rotate the body left faster thru the shot
