Polly Boyd Scholarship

Over the past 19 years, over 145 college scholarships have been awarded to those caddies or employees at The Honors Course by demonstrating high quality work ethic and attitude. Applicants are interviewed and qualified by indications of leadership, motivation, ambition, character, the potential to complete college and any financial need.

This scholarship program allows The Honors Course to attract aspiring young citizens with the desire and goal to succeed in life. Contributions to the Polly Boyd Scholarship are welcomed and appreciated.

hope this answers your question bluefan

Thanks. That is pretty impressive they can run their own program.

Am I correct in assuming this is a national membership club, or is it fairly local?

It is a national club, but there are a lot of local members too. The members that I know are also members of other clubs. They say the founder, Jack Lupton was pissed that he couldn't get into Augusta so he just made his own club.

Thanks for the link. Guess I can write off ever being invited to play there(if there ever was a chance to begin with.) Reading that, and the whole amateur golf credo. I've made my thoughts on amateurism clear many times. Suffice it to say they do not align with the founder's view.

But I do like that he went and made his own club in response. Nothing wrong with a little middle finger once in a while.

I heard it a little differently. Jack was a member at Augusta and felt like he was passed over to be the Chairman there, which caused him to found the Honors Course closer to home. They definitely use the same model as Augusta with a national membership and some accommodations on site for out-of-town guests. Peyton Manning is among the notable members, and he has a house in Ooltewah so it's close to home for him.

Another rumor for the OP: they say that Black Creek is built on the property that Jack wanted for the Honors Course, but he didn't get it for whatever reason.

I hadn’t heard the chairman one. Yes it definitely has that Augusta feel with the caddies in their white jumpsuits.

Here’s a good article I found with pics.

this might be a far fetched story about black creek but this is what i was told. in the old days, long, long time ago golf courses had a template of greens to choose from. the number escapes me but i think it was like 22 different designs. if you built a golf course you would always choose from these greens. obviously we have gone away from that. now whoever designed black creek chose their greens from those 100 year old designs. i can't dispute this claim because the guy that told me this really new his golf history. so to the OP it might be some history to dig into.

there are tons of stories about jack lupton. some true, some not. i will say that if anyone visits chattanooga and gets to enjoy downtown near the tennessee aquarium that was jack's vision. in the late 80's early 90's you did not go down there after dark! for being a rich a** dude he did some good things for his town.

The design was definitely meant to be a throwback to the old country, inspired heavily by Seth Raynor.

The very features that many "traditionalists" complain about are actually straight-up homages to holes that can be found in Scotland. I've heard good old boys say "I don't like that place...who the hell puts a bunker right in the middle of the fairway??" Clueless. The punchbowl green, the redan hole, the Biarritz hole, all are traditional old golf features.

I remember playing Black Creek the first season or two they were open, and many of those features were much more stark and well-defined. Some greens and bunkers had 90* corners. The spine up the 16th green was almost like a creased piece of heavy stock paper. The 8th hole thumbprint green was far more defined. They used to put furrowing rakes in the greenside bunkers...THAT was a challenge!

The course has gotten softer over the 20-odd years of maintenance (and likely from the kvetching of members too). I assume that the constructors overdid some aspects in the beginning with an eye toward how the course would mature.

I'm proud of my hometown. If you belong to a club it should be fairly easy to have your pro request access to almost any course up here.

The Chairman story is true from what I have heard. Apparently he felt passed up for ANGC position so built is own club.

The Honors is a great course and very tough. The entire staff is top notch and the caddy program is one of a kind. Having played several top private courses I must say their program in near the top.

If you get a chance to play soak it up, but if you get to stay on the grounds for the night it’s an even better experience.

So the funny thing is, it’s my mom’s hometown. My mom moved here to Atlanta with her family when she was 10 years old (way back in the early 60s), but a lot of my family is still in Chatt-town. I have never thought to bring my clubs to play because NONE of my cousins that live there play golf. We would usually make it a day trip when we could come visit BUT I’m thinking of making it a weekend trip with me and a couple of the homies. I’ll let you know. We are all ClubCorp guys, so we can get on Black Creek for cart fee. I also want to play Sweetens Cove. I’m the only WRXer in my circle of golfer friends, so I’d have to convince them that we NEED to play this 9-hole course on our little excursion. LOL!

Drive them up to Sewanee and play nine there, then have one of the world's best cheeseburgers while enjoying the view from the clubhouse. Hit Sweeten's on your way back. If they don't enjoy that day, get some new friends! :D

  • 2 months later...

Rather than starting a new thread figured I would just revive this one. I'm moving to Chattanooga in February due to a job offer I couldn't say no to. Actually pretty surprised at the amount of utility engineering consulting firms located in Chattanooga. I've been there a few times, but have only played bear trace. Always been a public course guy as I couldn't bring myself to pay the kind of fees they ask for up here in Milwaukee. Just looking for some advice on where to play as someone who has no connections and if there may be any affordable options in Chatt as far as private clubs go. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

things to consider. where are you going to live in chattanooga. in my opinion chattanooga does have some affordable options on private places. it almost seems like private courses out number the public courses. and the public courses can get crazy busy on the weekends and then you got to deal with the bubbas on the weekends sometimes.

We are still looking for a place... and honestly the places we are looking at is pretty scattered right now. We have been looking at a couple places in Red Bank and Soddy-Daisy, but its looking more like we'll end up in an area between East Brainerd and Cleveland. Our problem is we have three kids. So we need a 4 bedroom in a good school district but want to rent for the first year or two before we buy.

Consider Champions Club at Hampton Creek. This club was just sold last week. Already there have been improvements to this as new ownership seems to be willing to make this one of the best clubs in the area. I have been a member for 2.5 years. If the new ownership follows through, seems to be early on, this will be one of the best clubs in Chattanooga easily. It has 5 sets of tee boxes from 5300=7200 yards. Bent grass greens. Par 72. It is located in Ooltewah, north of chattanooga.

Maybe ignore this post as the new membership fees have just been released. New ownership may have overpriced this club. If you are under 40 years old I believe it would actually be cheaper to join Council Fire lol

If you are going to live near Cleveland, check out the Cleveland Country Club.

It would be about a 45 min commute to Chattanooga if you lived in Cleveland, so that may be too far to do all the time.

Cleveland Country Club is a great option in my opinion. the drive from McDonald is not bad. I was a member for about 5 years. I quit do to me not them. If you have kids which i you do it's a great place. The pool is great, good size with a diving board. Lifeguards are great and the servers in the pool are a good as well. Of the golf courses I have been around this is one of the best family atmospheres. A couple of years ago they hired a new SI and I have heard he has made some great improvements!

Windstone is one I’m thinking of changing my current membership to. Haven’t found a ton of info on it other than their website. They used to have lots of junior tournaments, but I believe it has a lot less now. I’m 41 and play as much as I can (over 100 rounds a year, hcp 4) and I like that they include carts in the membership fee. I know most private courses charge around $20 for cart on top of what you pay per month.
