And no - you can't over-mix epoxy.  If you introduce enough air bubbles to compromise strength, you being too aggressive in the mixing. 

 

 

 

Certainly one possible reason - but failures that hobbyists run into are much more commonly a result of poor surface prep of the shaft tip or hosel bore, not a problem with the epoxy or mix.    Keep the left over epoxy from the mix and check to see how well that cured to see if it really was the epoxy.

 

 

Very well put but I assumed he was talking 2 part quick set epoxy such as JB weld. Yes, you most certainly can mix that to long.

This. Over-mixing doesn't hurt anything, but under-mixing certainly will. Any air bubbles will be gone as soon as you insert the shaft into the hosel.

My recommendation would be to mix until you think it's good enough. Then mix for another minute.

I said "too much," not "too long."   Not the same thing.  The only thing that limits how long you can mix is if you do it so long that you run out of working time.   But that point was already covered earlier in the post.

Neither pure acetone nor alcohol leave a residue. In a related field, automobile refinishing, we prefer acetone, because it flashes much faster than alcohol. You do have to be sure of using pure acetone.

It also does much better with silicon based contaminants.

Silicone is the worst, because nothing will stick to it. That's OK when you don't want anything to stick to it, but it's a nightmare when painting anything that's been contaminated by it. I've seen guys spray a car panel that end up totally fish-eyed, and they had to sand it all off and start again. 😧
