5* Bounce on Miura 51* Wedge - Why?

In both the older Miura Wedge Series and the new 2018 Wedge Series, the 51* gap wedge has only 5* bounce as opposed to the 1957 Y and new Tour Wedges which have 9 to 10* bounce.

What are the pros and cons of low bounce gap wedges? I noticed most gap wedges have 8 to 12* of bounce?

I have struggled with a Gap wedge and always thought it was because of the low bounce. I finally got a SM6 Vokey F grind with 8 degree and a Srixon Z765 Gap with 8 and a Scratch that I think has 10 in the DS grind.

Japanese wedge bounce is sometimes tricky in my experience with low bounce Sand Wedges and High bounce Lob wedges. I prefer the opposite.

Yeah thanks, the low bounce 51* wedge seems to dig a lot.

I may be completely off, but it may have to do with the turf conditions in Japan. 99.9% of the courses have a warm season turf from tee to green, which is a type of zoysia called korai. It's very dense and the ball sits up quite nicely on the fairway cut which necessitates a shallower attack angle. Also it rains quite a bit in Japan, so very seldom do you have firm course conditions requiring low bounce around the greens. I think the combination of these two necessitate lower bounce in the GW range and higher bounce in the SW and LW. I've also seen more leading edge relief on JDM wedges, which may be due to the playing conditions as well.

I still don’t get bounce. For me it seems like the more the better - even in firm conditions.

The grind and sole width can make a club feel like it has more or less bounce, depending. I am with you on the Titleist F grind. I have it on an SM7 50 degree (8 bounce) and that grind is one of the best for me. Off tight or soft lies, pitches or full shots, it does it all really well.

Thanks, interesting, I will keep it because it is unique and will try it when I play in firm conditions,

This is Miura's reply to me via FB Messenger:

That is an older model and was made with lower bounce to compliment Japanese turf conditions. Last week at the PGA Show we launched a new wedge series, the Tour Wedge High Bounce. This series has higher bounce and will be available in April
