I use adhesion promoter on everything - but if you’re painting anything  plastic / patent leather -  you’ll need to scuff up and sand the areas + adhesion promoter and finally you’ll have to mix 2- hard with your paints in a 1:1 ratio.  And honestly  if you’re painting any piece of the shoe that is plastic / patent leather - that bends or flexes it’s going to crack.  I’ve turned down a lot of jobs on the Air Max 1 and jordan  11s because the paint just won’t last.  
 

In your pic -  I’d paint the tongue tag and the lace loop area since those won’t bend or flex much at all, but the material around the shoe won’t hold up well.  

For the Jordan 1 lows, did you sand/scuff those up?  I have an all white pair that I am going to paint but I'm not confident enough yet to pull the trigger.

@Bholden52 I used 600 then 1200 grit sandpaper very lightly.   It seems to be a good quality leather.  Then acetone then adhesion promoter.

Could you substitute a hairdryer for a heat gun or does it not get hot enough?

I’d use a heat gun for heat setting the sockliner.   I use a heat gun for everything, I’m just really careful about how close/how long I get to the materials.

I gave it a run for the heck of it. There are mistakes all over these but came out well for my first and probably only time. 

 

Credit to @mission_scratch, this is tedious work. He has all my respect now.

Correct-  and usually I’ll ask how they want the elephant print to look.  Some like it the OG style and it be the smaller EP. Or others want it to look larger.  Just depends on one’s preference.  
 

I use a Cricut for my stencils. Has served me well over the last year or so.

Did you make the elephant print stencil for the Cricut yourself or import the file?

Also, have you tried dyeing the soles of the white AJ1 Low yet? If so, any tips/tricks to get it to come out well, not bleed and last?

I have a question. If I start with a white shoe, that I want to be say... green. Then I want to do a stencil on top of that. How do I make sure my stencil doesn't pull up the base "green" paint?

If working with a leather shoe with decent leather and having those issues 90% of the time it is prep! Scuffing / sanding /  acetone / adhesion promoter will help avoid that

The only other times I’ve had issues with stencils and I’ve prepped the shoes the proper way was when I didn’t give enough dry time between coats.  

Also - if you’re working with a shoe that has subpar leather it can sometimes be unavoidable.  
 

when removing the stencil - after your last coat of paint - wait 20-40 mins.  Then go back and heat the stencil for 15-20 seconds then slowly pull off the stencil-  this should help a ton with that issue.
