MacGregor Maraging 100th

Recommended Posts

Well, I stumbled across another set I can't find much info on. What inspired these? Who inspired these? Did they come standard with graphite shafts? I gotta say; the ferrules are over the top awesome. Any info would be appreciated. Very slick looking set.

I see these on Japanese auction sites occasionally. They are hollow heads (though I'm not sure about the wedges, or even the short irons), and I have seen some sets with graphite shafts so I imagine graphite was an option.

They were a limited edition release (1,000 sets worldwide) to mark the centenary of Macgregor Golf's founding, so they date from 1997.

They used a steel/copper maraging* on what they called a "hyper-shell".

*Not sure of the correct English term. The Japanese is literally "Maraging Copper".

Are those hollow? Like PXG's and all the other trendy irons?

Thanks Catch, as always. Should have probably just pm'd you. These were found on a Japanese auction site and have not found any evidence of them other than this ad and another posted years ago. I didn't purchase these and don't own them. Anytime I run across an older set I have not seen before, I try to find out as much as I can about them. Very cool none the less, just not $450 cool.

I did a quick google search to make the pics you posted were the same as the ones I was thinking of, and I actually saw the same auction. I agree with you about their price/desirability. However, I *think* I've seen them cheaper in the past.

One thing I will add is that I am actually curious to find out how they hit compared to 1) modern hollow irons, and 2) the Taylormade TD Tour Preferred irons from...errr, 1988?...which were hollow in the longs irons. I had a set of the TDs and do not remember them being any easier to hit than long irons in other sets.

To be honest Catch, I'm just as curious as you are. If they were a couple hundred less to compensate the overseas shipping or sold a single beat up iron, I would probably scratch the itch. If you run across one, please do smack one around and report back :)

Wilco!

I keep looking at those pictures you posted....and they do look *very* nice. But that price....No. No. No.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
