Footjoy Dryjoy Sole Broken/Crumbling

Recommended Posts

There are some YouTube videos (just search golf shoe repair) for a few shoe repair shops. Can't make any recommendations, but the Bedo Leatherworks videos look like good work. No idea on price. They are in VA. Or check with a local to you shoe repair and see if they do any work on golf shoes. I am not even sure if yours can be repaired.

Nessim, sorry, I thought this was from May of 2021. Shoes are probably long gone.

Anyone ever have a pair of golf shoes resoled? Footjoy recommends a place called LaRossa, but they want $175 for new soles.

LaRossa is great.  I've had them resole a few pair for me as I have a narrow foot and not one shoe company makes a golf shoe that will fit my foot, since the day FJ stopped making Classics.  Price may seem high until you watch  a video or two and see the amount of labor involved.

I have several pairs of DryJoys that I have bought on deals/sales in pro shops over the years.

Expecting these shoes to be of extremely high quality I thought I was doing the right thing.  I just put them in my darkened cupboard in the garage until the day I needed them.

Obviously that was a mistake.  It seems FootJoy, are not only employing the services of cheap labour in the Far East to maximise profit, they ay are designing in a use by date.  If you don't use them you will almost certainly lose them and as I am experiencing, end up throwing what are basically brand new shoes in the bin because FootJoy, being the inflexible people that they are, don't want to know.

I would say that FootJoy no longer represent high quality purely on the basis of their shoes and the way they treat their customers.  What makes it worse is that I consider myself a longstanding customer - I feel completely and utterly p**sed off.

The only thing that you can do is salvage the laces, the softspikes, (brand new), and the insoles.  Everything else goes in the bin.

I have had perfectly good FitDogs where the uppers are in perfect condition but the spike housings have become detached.  I've had crumbling soles and separation from uppers and splitting across the much lauded Optiflex system, (as an engineer I would call it a stress raiser)

Take a look at my latest pair.  Sure I've had them a few years but I've stored them in the box in the darkened cupboard in the garage waiting the day they can come out in the nice sunshine, which they did this Saturday, (29 April).  When I got them home to clean them off with a stiff brush, they near fell apart in my hands.  This was after the only 18 holes of golf they'd ever seen.  No hard paths, all grass and only just 5,000 yards - so less than 3.5 miles.

I am no looking for an alternative make.  I just have no trust or confidence in FootJoy.  Anybody got any recommendations?

Looks like dry rot to me. I’m a huge Dryjoy fan, but those shoes are over 10yrs old. As good as Dryjoys are, the elements do effect them and they don’t last forever.

@Socketeer

the Polyurethane sole material is subject to a natural aging process – hydrolysis.

the synthetic materials basically disintegrate after a certain amount of time.

What happens when PU soles age?

PU consists of long polymer chains that are gradually split apart due to the effect of moisture. As a consequence, PU loses flexibility over time and gradually becomes brittle.

As the shoes reach an advanced age, this can lead to signs of disintegration in the soles.

Some shoes are often stored in the basement, shed or garage – places where higher levels of moisture are normally present. And it is precisely this moisture that amplifies the hydrolysis process and causes the shoes to age even more quickly, even though they are not actually being worn.

if you want to stockpile vintage shoes - stick with all leather sole construction and Goodyear welted items.

those can be rebuilt again and again.

What a thread. Having some background in materials, I'm also unsurprised by the decay.

Some of the other lengths people go to with their shoes though? Yikes.   $175 to resole a $129 pair of golf shoes?

It actually might be worth it if they are FJ Classics with the leather soles.

I was talking to a pro the other day and I mentioned the pair of saddles I have.  They are in mint condition, only used once for 9 holes.  They have the 6mm threaded ceramic spikes and individual drawstring bags all still in the original box.

He reckons shoes like these are collectible and are fetching up to and sometimes above £400, (around $505).

Unlike the DryJoys which are made of the substandard crappy materials these don't disintegrate.

I'm never stockpiling again.  Bargains can stay in the pro shops until I actually need them.  The price will inevitably be higher at time of necessary purchase but I must have lost over £300, ($380), thinking I can save money by stockpiling.  I say stockpiling.  Hell I just kept a few pairs in the cupboard thinking they would be OK.

I could see the way the styling of shoes was going, i.e. toward training shoe/football boot style, which I hate.  I wanted to future proof the classic style for myself like Payne Stewart or Miguel Angel Jimenez did without it costing a fortune.  Nothing wrong with that!

Classics are not $129 shoes though.  They would probably be $400 if they were made today.
