Project X LZ vs dynamic gold iron shafts

Recommended Posts

I have gone down a little bit of a wormhole looking into shafts. Have previously played Project X LZ 5.5 shafts in s55s that we’re just too soft. Played s300s for years but most recently used the Mizuno shaft optimizer that recommended a Project X LZ 6.5! Others were Amt white x and tour 120x. (84 ss and I think pretty much straight 6s). I was not prepared for that and really doubt I could deal with x shafts day in day out (x100s in college worked unless I was off and then they strangled me).

Light shaft experiments (modus 105) have taught me I still like the 120-130 gram shafts. Surprisingly despised the modus 120 shafts as most people say nothing but good.

But I am interested in trying a 6.0 vs S300 in my irons and wondered if anyone who has used these two shafts recently can provide their feedback/experience. I could do either. Have to admit that I love the feel of the lz shafts a lot. I have some irons with s300s and those feel good as well. Help!

Played 6.0 for a season and developed some serious elbow pain. Playing dg120 s300 right now and very much prefer those.

6.5 in LZ is a pretty stout shaft. Played it as well and it got tiring as a round progressed.

I wish I could offer more help, but I've never swung either shaft. However, I also recently used the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer, though they had me use it with a 7-iron instead of a 6-iron. My swing speed average with the 7-iron was just over 92mph and it recommended the the Project X 6.0 for me, so I'm really surprised that it recommended the 6.5 for you. I get that there is more to shaft selection than just swing speed, but I'd take your results (or mine, I guess), with a grain of salt and just go with what feels best for you. The other two shafts it recommended for me were the KBS C-Taper X and the Dynamic Gold S300.

It seem like both above mix up the standard PX 6.0 with 6.0 LZ and thats NOT the same at all. The LZ is in general a shaft that feels smoother, even if its stiff in both ends, thats not the case with the standard 6.0 who is stiff all the way, so the elbow killer is the standard, i have not heard about that with the LZ model, so i would not worry about going from DG S300 to PX LZ 6.0, thats way closer than S300 to standard PX 6.0 where PX stands out as stiffer than DG.

I’ve used both the LZ 6.0 and s300 (as well as s400) over the years. Both shafts work for me although I prefer the LZ over the DG. I’m thinking it’s a combination of the feel and slightly lighter weight. The LZ just worked well for me. I noticed that with the DG I started to swing poorly late in rounds. I contributed that to the extra weight but I don’t know for sure. Over the years of tinkering, I’ve honed in that I play better with shafts in the 115-120g range.

Last year I went to Fuji Pro 115 graphite and love them. They beat the LZ 6.0 I had been playing for a couple of years. If I get tired of the Pro, I’ll go back to the LZ 6.0.

I've hit/played both shafts a good amount. First, I've done the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer several times over the past 12 months and I can safely say it seem to always push me into a stiffer shaft than I know I can handle. For example, I'm PX LZ 5.5 ALL DAY and it always suggest 6.0. Miz measures my SS at 84 mph and I would stay at 5.5 all day so for you, 6.0 should be plenty. Wouldn't think twice about saying 6.0 is the correct shaft for you especially if you played 5.5 and said it was too weak. As said above 6.5 is a REALLY strong shaft.

Personally I like the LZ 6.0 over the DG S-300 because the LZ is 10 grams lighter. For feel, the DG feels slightly softer because it has a softer butt. The LZ is stiff in the tip and butt with softer mid-section. So, different shaft profiles. Spin was very close for me, within 200 revs and if there was a difference in ball flight, my eyes couldn't see it. On the monitor peak heights were identical.

That said I don't think there's a "wrong decision" for you to make here. Bottom line would be to get to a fitting card and hit the LZ 6.0 vs the S-300 and have someone evaluate your numbers. My guess is they are going to be fairly close and from there, you pick the one that feels the best to you and provides your preferred ball flight.
