Hovland signs with Ping, need to get the scoop on why iBlades in long irons and I210 in short irons

It's complex physics at work.

 

iBlade short irons go higher than the i210 for Hovland. And probably for other people too. You get that much fat in the base of a clubhead they will launch high. Many of the later Mizuno 'blades' are similar moonball launchers for certain angles of attack.

That's interesting. I have had the chance to hit the i210s a couple times now and all I can say is that they are scoring clubs, big time. They are quite overlooked, I'm guessing. I was able to move the ball really well with them. If I didn't love my Mizunos (and pay a handsome sum for them the past couple years) I'd own the 210s.

Really does make sense especially for good ball strikers who launch all their shots with mega spin (you know the 4 iron that lands softly and spins back). When that happens (and we do hear it a lot with pro's) with shorter irons it's just too hard to control in the wind and on the green. We might start seeing this more often if they can accept it. Though normally they just don't play blades. Would seem like a logical progression to just have say a whole set of i210s, but then who doesn't want to hold the greens with long irons better?

Pretty sure in the early 2000's Faldo had a mixed set of Ping i3 blade long irons and i3 o-size mid/short irons. Trajectory Windows & spin are what these guys fit to, not club head size look.

I loved my sets of i3 blades and o-size. Very under-rated sets

Me too.

I used i3 o-size irons back in the day as a UK +2.

 

Nowadays similar blade length Ping irons come with much wider soles & so (IMO) aren't appealing to as wide a range of buyers. In those days the marketing model was very different....
