Suggestions for non-golf activities during upcoming golf trip

Hello, My father and I will be travelling to Scotland on Friday and will be staying for 8 days. We already have all our golf planned out and will be playing only 1 round per day so we will definitely have some extra time. I am looking for suggestions on cool things to do after our rounds. We are staying three nights near Turnberry (playing troon and turnberry), then driving across to spend two nights near Muirfield (playing Muirfield), then we are heading to St.Andrews for 4 nights (playing New, Old, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns). Any recommendations will be much appreciated. FYI, we love alcohol!!

Here’s a random one very near Turnberry..

You must, must, must, visit Electric Brae. Don’t say anything to your father first it works better as a surprise.

That goes for any other wrxers heading that way. Read as little as possible first beyond the location. You won’t forget it.

Muirfield is close to the Boarders region. There are a number of abbey ruins in the border towns. Check out Kelso, Jedburg and Melrose. Great sites. Also, Rosslyn Chapel is on the way from Edinburgh to Melrose.

I always recommend a whisky distillery tour - unfortunately you aren't going to the best areas (Highlands or Islay IMO) - the closest to your route will be Glenkinchie. They do a nice tour - it was my 1st Scottish whisky tour also, because it's so close to Edinburgh. It will be right along your route from Turnberry to Muirfield.

Stirling castle also worth a stop, and as someone mentioned Falkirk wheel.

Since you say you are staying near Muirfield - are you maybe in N. Berwick? If not staying there, it's worth a visit... a cool town, and maybe try to play the West links if you get the chance.

Did that the same week as Electric Brae but unfortunately didn’t see it working!

Probably not much time for a lot of touristing with that itinerary, depending on the time of day of the golf, but this time around the wife and I joined Historic Scotland. Just by visiting Edinburgh Castle and a couple of other spots, we'll get the cost of our membership back and the little booklet has loads of other spots identified (of course, you can go to their website as well). Other than that, I figure she is my non-golf activity. ;-)

And yes, on the drive from Turnberry to Muirfield you go right by Rosslyn Chapel, plenty of other stuff to see on the way. We are stopping at a place not far from Rosslyn Chapel (after going there) for a little falconry - not an exhibition this time, we get to handle and fly actual owls and falcons! The Mrs. is very excited about that!
