Mizuno JPX Hot Metal Long Iron

Currently gaming JPX 850 Forged irons and for a while wasn't using the 4 iron. Swing speed is right around where 4 iron is the point of diminishing returns and for shots in that ~200 yard range into the green, I go with a 4 hybrid. However, I recently put the 4 back in the bag for tee shots as every now and then I did miss using it off the tee where there's a bit more room for error. That said, I'm considering going with a chunkier, friendlier iron such as the JPX 900 Hot Metal. Not too worried about keeping trajectory low, and offset looks to be about the same as the MX-23's I played not too long ago so I'm not NOT used to it. I know there was a thread a while back about going with larger, non-driving irons in the 4, but I was wondering if any JPX users have hot metals in the long iron spot and how they're playing them.

I have the jpx900 HM's (set) and absolutely love the 4 iron. It may be my imagination but I think it's shorter than contemporary 4 irons and is pretty easy to hit. The beveled leading edge really keeps the club from fatting a shot in decent conditions. They make a really sweet sound when you spank one off the tee. They are a little chunky but not in a bad way. Really liking mine.

Thanks for the response. When you say shorter, do you mean club length wise or distance wise?

Do you know if it has a .335 taper hosel? I saw one on the 'Bay but it's shafted with a C-Taper Lite which I think comes in both .355 and .370.

.355 is the hosel/shaft size

Sorry, meant that it felt like it was shorter length wise than my cobra irons, not distance wise. They go about the normal distance for a 4 iron for me, around 210-220ish

Plot twist, just remembered my old man has a JPX EZ Forged 4 iron that’s collecting dust. Might ask him to bring it next time he visits.

I've got a mixed set of 919 forged and tour. My 4 iron is a Hot Metal Pro however. It's a great club. I prefer the Pro over the standard as the offset was too much. I even hit it well off the fairway. Great head.

I could see how the HM pro would be a bit more in like wth your 919 Tour irons.

I’m gonna give this a go then. Maybe the EZ forged or if I find a cheap Hot Metal. Either should be an advantage over the 850 Forged.

I had a split combo of JPX 900 HM and Forged, my HM's were in the 4 and 5 irons and honestly - so easy to hit and launch - offset could be off putting but for what I'd gain in forgiveness, I was happy!

Not sure if you're looking for forgiveness or help with higher trajectory, but if you're looking for both then you would be doing yourself a disservice by not trying the mp20 hmb 4iron.

It has been the most pleasant surprise in my bag since November.
