Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro vs MP-20 HMB/MMC Combo ?

Hit-em

Recommended Posts

I'm presently playing the Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal Pros & have been thinking of picking up a set of the MP-20 HMB/MMC combos

I played the Hot Metal Pros last year & overal found them to be pretty inconsistent

I demo'd the MP-20's last week & loved the feel & flight, but hitting them off a mat at the store & actually playing on the course are two different things

I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to actually play the Hot Metal Pro's vs the Mp-20's & if so what your thoughts were between the two irons

Thanks

I demo’d both and did not like the JPX much at all. They felt much like the TM P790 which I disliked. After demoing the Mp-20 HMB (7 iron and 4 iron) I want them in my bag. I thought they were amazing. The feel was like a blade. My last 4 sets of clubs were Mizuno MP-30’s, 37’s, 33’s and currently MP-67’s with DG X100 shafts. My driver SS is 115+ and 95-96MPH with a 7 iron... the HMB felt equally as good to me (better with a certain shaft combo, but never tried the Modus in a blade)

At first, I tried the MP-20 HMB’s with the what was recommended by the Mizuno shaft optimizer, which was PX6.5, C-Tapers, and PX6.5 LZ’s........ I’m getting older and arthritic so after discussion with the fitter, I paired them with the Modus 120x and TX which are stiff, but feel soft, those are what I would like to pair them with. Most likely the 120X .... something I can age into. 43 with back problems and I tend to keep clubs for years that I like...... My gamers (MP-67’s) are from 2006-or 2007, so I figure I’d keep the MP-20 HMB’s for 10 years possibly. I figure in few years the 120X will suit me better than the TX. I couldn’t feel any discernible difference from the 2 anyways, just like I couldn’t feel the difference from the DG S400 and DG X100 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great combo set, but curious on why the combo? Where would you start the MMC and end the HMB and why? Just curios, being that I am looking to make a purchase myself.

From a Mizuno Review !

“Mizuno’s new “performance hybrid” irons, as Mizuno characterizes them, use different materials throughout the set. They have Chromoly 4135 faces in the hollow-bodied long irons (2-7 irons) along with tungsten weights in the sole, the 8-iron is made from Chromoly 4135 but without a tungsten weight, and the 9/PW are forged from 1025E with partially hollow cavities.”

The HMP’s are loooong.

I hit the 5 iron further than my CB57 3 iron.

They left a massive gap at the bottom of bag.

Id consider using the HMP’s you already have and just adding the MP’s where you were going to split the HMB’s.

I carry 5-AW along with 54 & 58 wedges, I was thinking of going with either a 5-6 HMB with 7-PW Mp-20 MMC or 5-7 HMB & a 6-PW Mp-20 MMC not sure at this point what I'll end up doing, I just might go for a full set of MMC's or HMB's

I demo'd the MP-20's with the Recoil 95 shaft regular which is what I'm playing in the Hot Metal Pros but I'd like to try them in other shafts before I decide

I'm 69 yrs old my swing speed with my irons is around 80 mph & have been playing graphite for the last 6 yrs, so I'd probably stick with graphite shafts, but I'm planning on trying these out in a steel shaft also just to compare

Any suggestions on shafts to look at would be appreciated

Thanks

I found the pros and hmb to be pretty similar. The hmp have less offset and thinner topline. Distance wise, both were long due to strong lofts. Mmc isn't as long, obviously. The hmp are cheaper than the hmb... well they were in my shop.

Personally, I'm going back to actual blades. Im tied of the low spin distance clubs.

Not sure I agree with this but your mileage may vary.

A standard off the shelf shaft in the HMB is the Nippon Steel Modus 105. I find most of the Nippon shafts to be very smooth. In 95 gram weight, have a look at the NS Pro 950. It’s an older shaft but was one of the first shafts putting Nippon Steel in the spotlight.

I also found similar performance with XP95 shafts. I prefer the Nippon shafts. There are also a few selections in KBS and Project X near the 95g weight.

Good luck - let us know your decision.

Well I decided to go with 5-6 in the HMB's & 7-PW in the MMC ..I hit these against my HMP Pro's & decided I liked the feel of the MP-20's better plus I was getting similar distance, so I placed my order for my set with the Recoils 95's F3 shafts ..should see them in a couple of weeks

Anyone interested in a set of HMP Pro's 5-PW with Recoil 95 F3 shafts in great shape ?

@Hit-em - I am considering purchasing the JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro's. Can you elaborate a little bit more on your statement of "...played the Hot Metal Pros last year & overall found them to be pretty inconsistent." WHat was inconsistent about them?

I’ve had HMP’s in the bag since shortly after being released. They are great clubs for my level of handicap which is right at 9.8. They are decently long without dropping spin to silly low levels. My 7i spin is right at 5400 rpm at 82 mph. Being in the PNW, I see juicy rough. Not an issues with the HMP. They dig the ball out fine. I get more out of mishits than I probably deserve on some swings! I’ve played these irons in Palm Springs last May and in Florida this past January and they were solid performers off the various grasses these areas use. I was between the HMP and the Forged. If the Forged had less offset, I would have gone that way but they don’t. No regrets going HMP.

remember hmp and hmb have 2 degrees difference in loft. hmp is 30 7i, hmb is 32. i went from hmp to hmb just because i wanted the feel and looks, but i ordered them 1 strong to be closer to my hmp and 0211 set.

The pros have more offset than the HMB? That’s not what mizunos website says.
