Hogan Signed Book

Afternoon All...

I just received another copy of The Modern Fundamentals after loaning out a previous copy and never getting it back...must be the third time now!! haha

Inside the front cover is the remains of what I believe is/was a message and signature from the main man himself; probably not uncommon but a nice touch given I just bought it online, second-hand.

Unfortunately about a third of the text and most importantly the signature are missing and I just wondered if anyone else had a signed copy and what note was written inside? I'm assuming that he wouldn't have thought up a new note for everyone, so I'm hoping that I can at least find out what it likely said, even if some of the original handwriting is lost?

That handwriting is worse than my wife’s. You really think it is Hogan?

Well I can’t pass judgment on your wife nor her handwriting but from other examples I’ve found online, the handwriting in my book looks very similar to that of Mr Hogan...

If it isn’t then it’s no great loss to me, I paid less than £5 for the book and don’t anticipate selling it to fund my retirement but I thought Ben Hogan was rather well known for playing golf, not so much his calligraphy!!

I have a 10-15 page handwritten letter along with drawn stick figures to illustrate the golf swing Hogan sent to a friend. I haven't looked at it in years but remember some interesting sidelights such as charging $5000 for a few days of instruction to a handful of guys. Back when written that was a lot of dough.

I had a friend who was a member at Shady Oaks, and who was casually acquainted with Mr. Hogan. I did my friend a favor, and he got Mr. Hogan to autograph a copy for me. He wrote "To (my name) with all good wishes for better golf, Ben Hogan.". When my wife (and IT person) has time, I will try to post a picture. I have no idea if it's worth anything, but it's priceless for me because of the memories of my friend.

I think it says something like:

Although we were not able to buy the implement perhaps a little knowledge on the subject will help.

 

As in: Jimmy wanted a Momentus swing-trainer to fix his swing, but his grandparents gave him this book instead.

I reckon you could be very close with that! It's interesting to wonder what little exchange took place just before he wrote what he did...

I'm happy just to have a book touched by the man and hope that just a little bit of magic rubs off!! haha

Interesting... Have you thought about contacting Colonial Country Club?? There is a Ben Hogan Museum there.
