My first set was a nice set of Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge blades handed down from my Grandpa. It was nice starting with blades because I didn't know they were supposed to be "hard to hit" so I just played golf, I would like to think my game is better today because of it.

My first set of sticks were RAM ARIES, blades, go figure. My dad bought them for me at a driving range when i was 8 I think. It came with a bright red, shiny bag. I still have the clubs, actually, I've made it a point to keep ALL the clubs I've ever played and eventually want to put them in my basement in wall sets like you see at the stores, with lights too.

OK so we go back a few years. What was the first set of clubs you had. (assuming you can still remember that far back) :)I had a set of Spaulding Tee Flites. Driver and 3 wood made out of some kinda of plastic/nylon material and the 3,5,7,9 irons and putter that came with this plaid bag. Soon graduated to a set of Northwesterns with laminated woods. I am amused at how we now complain because this ball or that ball get's scuffed by the groves on our irons. Back then when we mishit the ball it would have that big ole smile on it and the ball was toast. But honestly does any ball today feel as good an an old balata ball did?

I started in the UK in1954 and my first set of sticks were sticks, hickory sticks. I had a putter made by Winton of Montrose, same as Bobby Jones' Calamity Jane. Boy, I thought I was something.
I can remember my first set of 'spanners' (they're steel shafted clubs if you don't know the language). They were a set of Fred Daly autograph Master Model by John Letters, cost my father £5 ($20 then) at Windsor market. They must have been OK because I won an Auction Sweepstake tourney with my pal and made £200, $800) Did it again 2 years later. That first time I went and bought a set of Wilson Fluid Feel Dynas and 1-4 Wlison Top Notch woods.
Guess what, I'm now on my 4th set of Dynas, loved them so much.

KZG CH-ll irons, with Graphite Shafts. There was a "click" when you hit them, and they went as far as anything i've played since.

Not as old as some of the posters, but I didn't start playing golf till I was 35 years old!

4 Wood: TM Stealth

7 Wood: TM Stealth

Nope!

It was back in 1982, and a second-hand half set of John Letters Gary Player Mk IV Master Model were my first irons. I had 3,5,7,9 irons, supplied by Ken MacPherson the pro of Walton Heath, who lived next door to my grandparents. (I later added 4,6,8 that were fortuitously in the odd club bin at Rowlands Castle Golf Club). My first putter I recall was a Wilson bladed model of some type (I didn't like it and quite quickly bought a Palm Springs bullseye-style putter instead - I still use this 30 years later!). Woods were 1 and 3 Wilson laminates. I switched to a metal-headed Petron driver quite quickly. Ken later got me a John Letters PowerMaster 18/70 sand wedge, which I still own, but no longer use.

Interesting reading some of the older models - brings back some memories (although I don't remember Seve playing Ram - always associated them with Watson).

After a half-set of ladies clubs from my Mum for a few months my first set were Mizuno Silver Cup irons and some laminated Macgregor Nicklaus woods, probably around 1984. The putter was a knock-off of the very first Ping putter - very odd looking thing that was soon swapped for a Spalding blade putter.

Taylormade M1 440 - Tensei CK Pro Orange TX
Adams VST Hybrid (19) - GD AD-DI X
Tour Edge Exotics CB4 (4 wood) - GD AD-DI X
Mizuno JPX 919 Tour (5-PW) KBS S-Taper S
Mizuno JPX 919 Forged (4) KBS S-Taper S
Taylormade Milled Grind (52 & 58, SB) - Nippon Modus 130 S
Taylormade Spider Tour (red) / Scotty Cameron Button Back Newport
Titleist Pro V1
Feeling sad and neglected: Taylormade P750 (4-PW) / Srixon 765 (4-PW) - Nippon Modus 3 130 S

An Auction Sweepstake Tournament is a Pairs better Ball format with a draw for partners.
Each pairing is auctioned off the night before the event and the cash raised goes into a kitty. The Club/ Organiser takes 10%, the balance is divided up usually down to 4th place.
Typical payouts might be 1st place - 40%, 2nd - 25%, 3rd - 15% and 4th- 10%.
Each pair is entitled to buy themselves at the Auction, or 50% of the auction price from the purchaser if not thmeselves. Thus, in the latter case an individual player would only get 25% of the winnings.
So, back in the mid 1960s I was drawn to play with Chris Plumridge (later to become a well known golf journalist and writer) and we won. However, we could only afford to buy a half share of our auction price, too bad, huh! Well, to give you some idea of the size of the kitty, I took home £200 and bought a set of Wilson Dynapower irons and Top Notch woods from a Pan Am pilot who was doing a bit on the side. Happy days! Pity the R&A banned Auction Sweepstakes as part of their anti-gambling policy, they were a lot of fun.

My 1st club was a very old scuffed driver cut down with black electrical tape as a grip when I was 6 in 1967.

In 1970....Dad bought me a used 7 piece jr. Powerbuilt Citation set with a black golf bag for $35 in 1970....in retrospect.....it was alot of money considering I just bought a used set of TaylorMade HT irons 5-PW for only $135 on eBay.

Still use my Dad's 1970 Ping Anser as a back-up every now and then.

There was minimal jr. equipment back then.....my 1st pair of spikes were lady's shoes.

Mine were a set of Ram Aries, blades nonetheless, for a 11 year old, lol. Plus I got a bright red leather bag. I still have the set. I keep all my sets and have my basement wall lined with them in wooden wall sets, like you see at a retailer.

These were my first full set, from my dad. Rubberized cork grips and fluted shafts. Miss the sweet spot and it would knock the fillings out of your teeth. Still have em.

1959 I was 6 years old, bought Wilson Sam Snead Young Champs with silver dollars my Grandfather had been giving me. If I remember correctly they cost 36 dollars at the local Western Auto store. I lost track of them and last Christmas my brother gave me back the driver. About 2 months ago I walk into a thrift store and find the 3,5,7,9 and 3 wood. Sweet spot on these irons the size of a BB! I wonder what the silver dollars would be worth?

$32.1 = silver price / ounce on Jan 20, 2012, this is the estimated value of the silver in a silver dollar.

But then again, what is the fun worth that you had with that set of clubs? Priceless... :drinks:

I started golf hitting a couple of cut down clubs at the driving range but my first "set" I received for my 12th birthday. My Dad asked me to come out to help him get something out of the car. He opened the trunk and there was a brand new Junior set of Kroydon clubs in a Scotch plaid golf bag. That would have been about 45 years ago!

Who remembers the plaid golf bag?
