As its be brought up from the dead i feel obliged to reminisce

Petron Impala 3 wood, 5,7,9 irons and a petron bulls eye style putter.

The Petron factory was about 40 miles from where i lived and later on sponsored our County junior team.

Taylor Made RAC OS with regular flex graphite shafts. I purchased them on ebay obviously had no clue about a fitting process. I tried to trade them in and found out they were fakes. I then (after talking to the club pro) purchased the PING G28's; 2 weeks later the i25's came out and made the switch. I've never been so excited for clubs to arrive that I picked up my i25's at the UPS station on my way the airport (for my first buddy golf trip). I sold the g28's to a buddy that still plays them.

Northwestern ladies irons, Sandra Haynie autographed models with the 2,4 woods. The woods were laminated, painted blue as I recall. I hit the 2 iron about as high as I was tall, which was about 5'2" at the time.

Can't remember the woods but the first complete matching set of irons I had were a used set of wilson ld's. Still remember the first brand new complete set of clubs I ever bought. Ram accubar 1,3,4,5w and matching irons. Bought my first new ping putter to go with them. After that came a set of pin seeker irons.

That was to far back in the foggy past to remember anymore, something my Grandfather gave me. Do know the first set of new clubs I bought. Complete set of Excaliburs, Pro Golf Discount's house brand. They came with with some stiff as a rebar, heavy shaft. DG S300 IIRC, probably why I dislike them to this day. Hated those clubs so much that I stopped golfing and started fishing for 10+ years. Even bought and rigged out a fishing boat. Oh, the $$ squandered. Makes golf club ho'ing pale in comparison.

First set was a miss mash of random clubs bought from a farm auction for $5 back in the 80s. It had 4 putters, a couple of 2 irons, and 4 hickories that were at rough guess close to 3, 5, 7 & 9 iron lofts. Dad threw in an old Gary Player 3 wood and away I went for the first year.
Wish I'd kept those hickories now

Next was some thing new. A half set of PGF Power Pacts 3&5 woods and 3,5,7 irons & Wedge. Kept putter from old set.

First full set was PGF Slammers 1,3&5 woods and 3-SW.

The first set of complete clubs that i had were a set of Wright & Ditson blades 2-pw and woods...they were straight out of the late 40's 50's. The topline was so thin you could have used them to spread butter on toast. I bought them at an auction they came with a robin egg blue pleather back, and a pair of black and white wing tip shoes that didn't fit but i wore them anyway. Still have a couple of the irons floating around as well as the woods to bad i didn't store them very well and the woods cracked.

Reference the OP's heading for the thread, something I was told years ago;

Sticks are hickory shafted kit.
Steel clubs are called 'spanners'. lol
[/quote]

Hickory = Sticks I get. Steel = Spanners (?) I don't get. I need the English translation of that please. TIA.

This may help to explain a Brit's reaction when we use the term "shag". ;)

I think it's something about what the late Peter Doebereiner (one of the world's best golf writers ever!) wrote. He said ' Steel golf is about precision and calculation, hickory golf was about inspiration and manipulation.'. He was, of course, refering to the original hickory game, not it's modern reincarnation in which many players strive for mechanical perfection in their quest for equipment to fit their modern golf constructs.

Thus 'spanners' relates to the specific and graded sets in a tool kit. There is, imo, a direct correlation between such a tool kit and a set of steel shafted irons.

Re the 'Brits' take on the use of words, we tend to be less literal than most Americans and perhaps more artistic. Probably something to do with the way English is taught over here, starting with the medieval Chaucer, and onwards. The most accurate English is to be found in the Northern Isles. Und so weiter.....!

My first "set" were Northwestern Marty Furgol 3W, 3,5, P bought new one club at a time in 1965, in a red and black oval Sunday bag. A couple years later, my Dad bought me a set of pyratone Wright and Ditson Beeline irons with 3 Ted Ray woods, in an ancient canvas Sunday bag. Early steel shaft, they didn't have numbers, just names, niblick, mashie, etc. He got them for $3 from a co-worker.

I used them for 10 years, until I was gainfully employed, and ashamed to carry such equipment. I gave the Furgols to a neighbor kid, and the Wright's, I sold to a co-worker for $20 in 1980.

In 2005, for nostalgia, I bought a set of 1930 Walter Hagen Star lines, very similar to the clubs my Dad bought me. I play them once in a while.

Wot? You mean like shag-pile carpet or shag pipe tobacco, maybe a smaller version of the cormorant?

Love that. So true. Quite often on approach shots, will find myself thinking that any of about three clubs might be appropriate for the shot in terms of distance, but needs a lot of imagination to figure out what is going to work in terms of flight, bite and so on. Far simpler with modern clubs when you are basically carrying a bag full of wedges of varying length, but far less satisfying.

  • 3 weeks later...

Back in the mid 70's as a teenager I got a new starter set of Specrtras- don't remember if it was Christmas/birthday or what the occasion. Laminated Driver and 3 wood 3,5,7,9 blade irons and chrome Bullseye style putter. They had these round, horrible, rock hard, brown rubber grips, including the putter. Google tells me that they were made by Northwestern. They had to be pretty bad if Northwestern wouldn't even put their name on them, lol.

Northwestern Lee Trevino model set 3-pw plus 1,3 &5 woods. They were pretty inexpensive and had economy shafts with huge steps in them.

After playing with them a couple of years i bought a used set of Maxfli Australian blades and a used Tony Penna driver.
