Handicap on card

I was referring to match play allocations in which deviation between high and low cappers is used instead of straight “hole difficulty.” I thought that this sort of analysis by handicap index was provided by Allied Golf Associations, I hope that’s still the case as that methodology makes good sense to me. Perhaps I’m wrong?

I know that when my home club last reviewed and revised our Stroke Allocations, we followed the "old" method to determine where the biggest differences were between higher and lower handicappers, just as you describe. The basic analysis numbers were provided through our state association, based on hole-by-hole scores entered through GHIN. I'm guessing that GHIN did the actual number-crunching. That was the recommendation from the previous Handicap Rules, which suggested two methods of analyzing the hole-by-hole data. (Rule 17-2 here https://golfcanada.ca/app/uploads/2016/02/2016-Handicap-Manual-6x9-ENG-FA-web.pdf) The 2020 WHS rules now suggest a different method, based on the Scratch and Bogey ratings as compared to par, and a general method to distribute strokes somewhat evenly through each 9, see Appendix E in the Handicap Rules.

I agree with you, the old method made a lot of sense, as the handicap stroke indices really apply more to match play than to stroke play. However, the new Net Double maximum hole score would probably work best if strokes are allocated based on difficulty. I feel like I've read that some courses have different numbering for stroke and match play, but I've never run across that myself.

In the club I played with and now, in the groups I play with, we'd note the "Playing Handicap" on the card. We'd never trust some of these guys to figure out the PH if we put the CH on the card. LMAO

But in the games I play now it's not an issue since we seldom, if ever, play a partner type game so of course the PH is the same as the CH. But if we DID, I'd like to think the "Boss" would have the PH on the card.

Were those percentages under the old handicapping rules as well ? Lotsa games in there I've never played and some I've never even heard of. LOL

My old club (pre-2013) was actually loath to play anything but a 2 best ball 4 man team GROSS game. Other than a single Holiday each year (July 4th), where we generally played 2-man team scramble for 9 holes and alternate shot for the other 9, try to get them to do ANYTHING different and the moans and groans would start up immediately. That holiday date was seldom as well attended as a "normal" club day.

Of those other games, I've run into the 2-man scramble occasionally, mostly in SE Asia.

My old club, playing that 2 best ball 4 man team GROSS game as its staple, didn't need HCs on the scorecard. We also played some handicap stroke play tournaments during the year, most of which were simply 100% CH, so the player handed in a correct scorecard and the committee simple calculated the net.

The games I play in now are less formal than belonging to an actual club. But they are generally either a team game with everybody (else) playing at 100% off the low HC that day, or on an individual basis @ 100% CH.

I just took a look back, and although I didn't check really diligently, it seems like most of the formats were discussed in the 2016 handicap rules. I know a few of the percentages changed in 2020.

I'm sure a lot of them are pretty old.

I can remember, when we first started the July 4th 2-man scramble thingie in the early 90s how nobody could believe it was 35% of the lower 'cap and 15% of the higher one. LMAO
