I was fortunate to play Nanea last week and it was a fantastic experience. Obviously a DMK design. Some say it is the Bandon Dunes of Hawaii.

While the course in built on the side of a mountain, it did not feel hilly at all. I also played Mauna Kea, which I felt was too hilly to really enjoy.

The club was very low key and unpretentious and the course immaculate. Greens were the fastest I have ever experienced.

FWIW, I doubt Nanea is harder to get on than Augusta.

I just stumbled on this thread.

I played it early in December.  I generally play 3 DMK courses every year (Tetherow, Bandon Dunes and Gamble Sands), and Nanea fits nicely in between Tetherow (which can be brutal if the greens are fast) and Gamble Sands (way more forgiving that Tetherow).  I thought this course provided a very good balance between difficulty and opportunity.  I'm not sure if I like it as much as I like Bandon Dunes, as the terrain of Bandon Dunes sets it far apart from most golf courses.  Other than that, this course design seems to strike the right notes every time.  One thing about DMK courses for me is that they're fun to play, and this one especially so.  Some of that was due to the perfect weather and course conditions, but still, the design is thoughtful, interesting and challenging.

One of the best things about this course is that the grass is all Paspalum.  Just beautiful lies, every time, and the greens don't suffer the graininess of Bermuda grass greens.  They were absolutely perfect.

EDIT: Bonus pic.  Mauna Loa was erupting, and this picture is of the third green at nearby Makani, with the eruption in the background.
