Head Rotation in the Downswing

kobe123

Recommended Posts

Wanted to gather everyone's thoughts on this subject as I go back and forth mainly because I haven't seen a ton of people with the same head move that I have. My head seems to rotate much more than others in the downswing with my eyes rotating towards the target or even left of it. I'm frustrated because I hit balls almost every day, yet my scoring, nor ball striking has significantly improved. I seem to shoot the same scores I was shooting 10 years ago (70-76).

Struggles:

Chunks

Toes

Occasional block/pull

Is this due to my head movement in the downswing? I'm just demotivated due to the fact that I seem to be stuck in a position where I'm not improving with amount of practice I put in.

Looks to me like you rotate too early and get stuck.   Head has nothing to do with it.    Gotta keep  closed longer to get arms down and in synch.

Any drills to do this besides "stay closed" longer?

Justin rose.     Got to get the hands below the shoulder before you really apply the rotation.

Monte NTC has a freezer where you get to top, extend elbow a bit and ud/flex wrist then go fromthere.   As monte says want to rotate more then delay rotation.

Can do this with a buddy or just by yourself while staying closed.   Just slow.  Question would be do you have a lateral/ recentering move in transition cause that is the time when the arms start down.   Didn’t granato have you doing this rose drill?

I think this issue is much more pronounced with the driver - looks like you don't keep the left shoulder down long enough and separate it from your chin and drop that right shoulder - are you trying to hit up on it?     The Rose drill works to get that left shoulder off and moving away from the chin early so you don't have to tilt too much through impact.        You've got a heck of a lot good going on but Monte has noted he see's a lot of this on his lesson tee even Heath posted today about a lesson with Chase Cooper on the same thing.

Driver - more right shoulder on chin longer right shoulder drop earlier and at impact.

Compare to Scott

Much less tilt and look how much further his left shoulder is from his head - all from keeping left shoulder lower longer

Oh I agree 100% on the differences, just no idea how to fix it. I feel like this issue is holding me back.

Do you think the AMG and Rose drill would help?

100%.     You just need to feel the arms moving down more now - they come down before you really ramp up the shoulder turn.       Do freezers or do them at 30% speed.  It is the straighten of the right arm that is important - it has to start straightening pretty much from the start - try to hold it bent or trying to pin your arm to your chest are ways to keep that shoulder from separating and the arms not working down fast enough.

Yet another old video on this exact move - maybe if he was more well know it would be called the Ted Norby drill, lol.    But I'm sure even he didn't invent this.

Another look.  Scott Hamilton was working on getting this guy to point his forearm at the ball.   Note how much more extended his right arm is compared to yours.   And how much higher is right shoulder is at this point.   Some times it's the small things in good swings that make a big difference.

I'm going to work on getting the arms to start the downswing. I'll take some videos today.

A really good aid is the gravity fit - I have one and use it without the t-pro - you have to work to stretch the bands going back and work to keep them stretched on the way down - so you get width back and thru - if you early bend or over bent your elbow you lose tension in the bands and same if you try to keep your right arm bent in downswing.

A smart ball can help but too me it is more for overall arm structure and helps with width but you don't get the same feedback on the right elbow.   $100 bucks but between it a smart ball, some alignments stick and my visio putting template it is one of the best aids around.

Poor man gravity.  Would have to try it.   Does look like it loses tension in the downswing.  Worth a shot.

It seems like you have been given some great advice here.

A feel that has helped me do what the swing doctors have ordinated is to axe the club downplane. I start by axing the heel of the club straight into the ground without any turn back and forth. I do this a couple of times to get a feel for how to work the club with my arms and my back arms.  Then I combine with the turn and axe it downplane towards the ball.

You have a lot of good things going on, but the left shoulder going up early is similar to the issue I have tried to kick for a long time.  The thing that fixed it for me was having lv_2_hack Chase Cooper stand and hold my left shoulder with his hand just like the Granato was doing with Webb.  I would get the feel of the left shoulder going down and around vs up.  The thing for me that was surprising was how quick it happens and the fact that you do not have to move that left shoulder down and around for very long and then you can let it rip and right tilt as normal.  But that left shoulder has to stay down at the beginning.  He would have me turn my lower body and drop my arms as I stay in left tilt.  Feel like you stay tilted left longer and then everything else is normal, just jump from there and extend.  That is what worked for me anyway.  I am hitting it so much higher and better now golf is more fun than it has ever been.

Any videos of this so I can fully understand?

I don't have any but if I did, they would literally look exactly like the AMG video of him holding Shauns shoulders while he dropped his arms and rotated his lower body.  Or the video of Rose, those are perfect videos.
