Relative Swing Weights for Driver and Fairways

Brenkj

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know from my recent posts, I've begun to obsess over adjusting the weighting of my clubs to try and dial in a good "swing feel".   My driver and fairway woods (TS2) have interchangeable head weights, so now I've started to play with those.   I started with my driver, and I've pretty well decided that a "+6" head weight feels the best to me (6 grams heavier than the weight that comes standard with the club).

Now I've started trying to dial in a similarly good feel with my fairways, and I'm wondering if there is any sort of general consensus on how the weights of those clubs should relate to each other (for example:  the 3W should be a little heavier than the driver, and the 5W should be a little heavier than the 3W).   Of course, ultimately I will go with what feels right to me, but it would be nice to have some sort of reference point as a start.    In case it matters, I pretty much only ever hit my 3W off a tee - never off the deck, and I use my 5W and 7W exclusively off the deck (never with a tee).     Thanks.

I would love to know as well. My driver was pretty light to begin with and when compared to my 3w I was blown away. My driver measures C4 (way too light) but the 3w is E0.

I got a weight kit coming and I'm going to try a few things. But to get it to 3w weight I need a heavier shaft.

Swing weight?.....if you know what that is, you would never ask a question like this....

When we go shorter from driver to WOOODs...
- Add 10 grams head wgt pr inch shorter
( when we have got to irons its 16 grams pr inch)
- Add 2.3 to 6 grams uncut SHAFT wgt pr inch
(2.3 = Constant wgt Woods - 3 to 5 grams  = Ascending wgt)

If TOTAL wgt is 12.3 - 16 gram pr inch, 2/3 SWP progression pr inch can be used for MOI match, but we should NEVER build and have SW values as target for a club we never tried before, this values tells NOTHING without all the other.

For short, if you think you know what "D3" feels like....dont ask for my help with numbers.

So...its NOT SW values. FORGET THEM, its about TOTAL wgt progression, and that parameter is personal like all others, and for WOODS it can be 12 to 17 grams pr inch, and how that weight is distributed is a question of the shafts balance point and your preferences, so its hardly ever a good idea to just do the numbers on the paper and build it. You can get a good idea of where you most likely will end up or simply a good starting point, but testing and fine tune is always needed.

Just to be clear,  I'm planning on ultimately basing this all off feel.   But I figure I can save myself some time, and money, if there are some broad guidelines for dialing all this in.   I think I now have my driver set in such a way that my body and swing seem to agree with it.    I'm assuming that, since the 3W is about 1.5 inches shorter, I should focus - at least initially - on slightly heavier head weights, to compensate for the shorter shaft, and still achieve a similar swing feel?   Same basic concept for the other two fairway woods, since they're also shorter?   Bottom line - I'm just trying to narrow the number of head weights I have to buy to try out from 7 or 8, to 2 or 3.

I always do detailed impact pattern testing on the face, along with ball flight.  Just a small change in weight can instantly move where exactly on the face we tend to strike it...and sometimes it's hard to feel the small differences.  Our sense of feel in terms of what weight feels the best, does not always match what weight will actually perform the best.
