TPI Fitting Oceanside, California

DirtyBirdie11

Recommended Posts

In the process of setting up a full bag fitting at the West Coast facility for early June. I wanted to go to Manchester Lane (being a South Carolina guy) but they are all booked up for the summer and football practice keeps me busy the closer we get to August. I am enjoying all of the previous threads detailing their experience with TPI. I wanted to consult the masses and ask about courses/restaurants in the San Diego area I should look into. I think Im going to be 'in town" June 1-4th.

Are you into beer at all? If so I can point you at some brewery/restaurants in SD County. If you've never been to the Stone Brewing Bistro & Gardens (either Escondido or the San Diego Liberty Station location) it's an experience. Escondido is a short drive across the 78 freeway from Oceanside/Carlsbad. Their menu is a bit eclectic, but very good, and the grounds are really cool.

If you're looking for something really casual, Pizza Port Brewing in Carlsbad (or any of their other locations) is a good time. Good pizza and great beer (their own + guest taps)--only downside is they don't do table service so I recommend sitting at the bar if you can.

Beyond that, in SD County you're basically never more than a 9 iron distance from a brewery lol 😉

Beyond brewpubs I can't offer too much as SD is a bit far south for me, except that I've been to Campfire in Carlsbad, which was really nice. Cool vibe and great food. If you're in the Oceanside area it's a short drive south.

I've been dying to try Richard Blais' restaurant, Juniper & Ivy, which is downtown. But as I've never been there personally, I can't recommend it based on anything more than reputation.

Edit: one more thing... You probably think that you're going to be coming for amazingly insane great weather, because SoCal is certainly known for that. However, we have a season here known as "June Gloom", which is when we get a lot more overcast and misty days, sometimes even on the chillier end for here. Based on the time of year you're coming, I'd just say to pack accordingly. It's still great weather relative to the rest of the country, but June might be a little more damp than you expect.

Thanks man. I will definitely look into these. Breweries sound like a great way to spend time away from the course/fitting. Brews wont be the only vice I enjoy while out west....

Where exactly are you staying? That will be a big determination on recommendations.

Juniper and Ivy is, by far, one of me and my wife's favorite restaurants. You'll really enjoy it.

Since you've given a green light on brews (as you can see from my avatar, it's kinda one of my things), here are a few:

Ballast Point - although they went "commercial" by selling out for $1B to the company distributing Modelo, and then apparently got sold off by them for a song to some nobody brewery in Chicago which makes no sense, their beer and their facility is really cool. I've been to the one in Miramar. They also do serve pretty good food.

Green Flash - also in Mira Mesa. Their beers are outstanding, and a few years ago they acquired Alpine, which was a HIGHLY sought after brewery that was very production-limited, so at their tasting room you can get both. No kitchen on-site as far as I am aware, but sometimes have food trucks as I understand it.

Modern Times - I think their only locations are down in SD proper, but they make some outstanding beers and their brewery is a really cool place. Not sure if they offer food as I don't think I was looking for it either time I went there.

White Labs - Have to give this one a shout-out... White Labs is one of the major brewing yeast suppliers in the US. In their Kearny Mesa location, they opened a brewery tasting room. This one is more educational to understand the effects of different yeasts on beer. I.e. you can order a flight of 4 beers that are brewed with the same recipe (grains/hops) but the only difference being the yeast, and the beers can have remarkably different flavor profiles. By being here you're clearly a geek about golf, so if you have any interest in being a geek about beer, it's a really cool place to try out.

Disclaimer--I haven't been much of anywhere in the last 12 months due to the recent worldwide unpleasantness, so please investigate these places to make sure they're still open before you go lol...

There is a Karl Strauss restaurant just down the road near Legoland.  I know the guys at TPI will also have some good recommendations.  They are a local brewery and also have a tasting room.  As far as golf, of course Torrey is a must play and Coronado Muni is also great...right on the bay.  But make reservations ahead they will probably be busy.  If you have private club connections then you can't go wrong with The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe or La Jolla CC.  San Diego CC is also a great old classic course.  Billy Casper was a caddie and longtime member.  Have a great time!!

Public courses - Torrey is a must if you've never been there. I got to play there quite a bit when I moved to SoCal, from 97-2000 or so, until they raised the rates for everyone not SD City resident. I can't stomach paying several hundred when I remember paying $50-$60.

Outside of Torrey - Avaira is outstanding. La Costa has improved greatly over the last decade. Maderas is a great track, Barona Creek is great.

Nice Mid $ to Low $ Bargains - Arrowood, GC of California in Fallbrook. The Crossings in Carlsbad , Enagic GC, Mt. Woodson.

And it should always be mentioned in SD golf discussions, the 2 hour drive to Rams Hill in Borrego Springs is so worth it. However, in June it will almost certainly already be closed for summer.

If you're flying out for Titleist I am guessing you are also into Scotty? If so I would suggest a visit to the Scotty gallery combined with a trip Taco Stand and/or Death by Tequila in Encinitas on the 101.

Definitely planning a trip to the Gallery. What should I be expecting? Two sessions they are "open"...think there will be lines to wait in?

Forgot about La Costa...definitely a must play.  Rams Hill will be closed.  They are usually open until mid to end of May.  Aviara is good resort course.  The LPGA was there a couple weeks ago.

Barona Creek is good also.  They used to play the NIKE/Web.com/whatever it is now Tour Championship there.  Good casino too.

I appreciate all the input. I am definitely going to get a round or two in while I’m in town. I got everything booked so the only thing left to do is wait. I haven’t read anything bad about the fitting experience and this is going to be my first time getting fit for clubs so I anticipation grows by the day. Figured I’d list whats in my bag now and update this after my fitting. Reading the many reviews and experiences on here made booking the trip easier with every read.

Driver

This is the only driver I’ve ever owned. It is going to be a sad day when my red baby gets taken out of the bag. This thing has been through it but feels as hot as it did in 2013. Ive played it exactly how it came out of the plastic.

  • Nike VR_S Covert 10.5 Stock Kuro Kage 50 Stiff

Woods

I got the 3 wood with the driver so the history is deep with that one. It’s odd seeing a fixed hosel on a club these days. I have never really gotten comfortable with this club so it will be nice to get a fresh start with something. The 5 wood is my baby and I am interested to see if a hybrid takes this clubs spot or I stay with a 5 wood. I took my gap wedge out to have another spot for a club at this end of the bag. I think the average golfer needs more help at this end rather than 4 loft options around the green.

  • Nike VR_S Covert Tour 2.0 19 Stock Kuro Kage 70 Stiff

Irons

I made the switch from my Nike VR_S Pro Combo to these blades after getting them in the most ludicrous golf swap ever. A buddy of mine needed a Nintendo Switch for his baby sister when they were in popular demand so he gave me a full set of 716 MBs for the Nintendo Switch I had. These suckers were in immaculate shape and basically cost me 300 bucks. I want to blend a set of the MBs with some help in the 4 and 5 iron and probably replace my 3 with a hybrid or utility. I am looking forward to optimizing iron specs. Switching to blades and realizing first hand that they were aren’t as big of a game changer as cliche golf talk makes them out to be has been a pleasant experience over the past year

  • Titleist 716 MB 3-9 Stock Dynamic Gold S300

Wedges

I love these things. Slight love hate relationship with them because they contributed to the fasciitis in my elbow but these are the only clubs that have my personal touch on them. I got the blacked out SM6s and soaked/scrubbed them until they appeared as raw steel. Then I colored the paint fill in to match the schools that I have coached football at. I plan to do the same with a new lineup of SM8s and want to dive into stamping. The old SM6s will be great for practice.

  • Titleist Vokey SM6 46f/54s/58s Stock Dynamic Gold S200

Putter

Got this sucker from Golfsmith circa 2014 for 150 bucks off. The Nike Method I owned at the time had a very high resale value apparently. (Cashier at Golfsmith was shocked lmao). I sent it to the custom shop to have it tricked out and love the result. I want to start a Scotty Collection and eventually put this one up on the wall. A new Phantom 5.5 would be nice but that may be purchased later in the summer. From the website it doesn’t seem like TPI does putter fittings. Makes sense with the SC Gallery being so close.
