Tee box , I believe.

do you know what the lines or the red dots represent?

5 yards according to fine print bottom right.   Assume red dot means tee location

according to the bottom right of the sheet, its says that "each tee tick mark represents 5 yd" increments.  So, the different shaped boxes are the shapes of the tee box and the tick marks are 5yds each.  So #1 looks to be approximately 31-32yds deep.  The circles (i would assume) represent where the tee markers are for that rounds.  So again on #1, the tee markers are about 10yds from the back of the tee box.  The one thing I can't figure out is some holes appear to have 2 sets of markers? like 3, 4, 6, 12 and 16.  4 of those 5 are par 3's, so not sure if this is some sort of drop circle marking?

ah, nice catch! "each tee tick mark represents 5 yards."

so if i had to guess then:

  • looks like #4 has 2 separate tee boxes
  • #3 has 2 different possible teeing areas in the same box
  • #12 has 2 possible teeing areas in the same box (?)
  • and the tick marks represent the direction you walk into the teeing area

i'm not confident in these guesses at all. anyone have corrections?

My guess is they set hole locations and tee positions for the rounds - and these sheets - well in advance. But they give themselves choices for the tees on the 4 par 3’s and the reachable par 4 (#3). They probably have a preferred and secondary choice. Conditions - wind and temperature - could lead them to go with the secondary choice. It’s a 50+ yard difference between the two tees on #4.  230-240 yards into a strong wind(?) Probably not. They would likely move it forward.

I think on each tee box, depending on size, there will be one or two plaques/distance markers. I think the red dots indicate the location of these markers. On the 2 images I found they look like they're in the same spots as the pin sheet which suggests they dont move.

On a par 3 for example you will be told/know the distance from the plaque to the middle of the green. From in line with this distance marker/plaque you can pace out to where the tee is set up for the day & work out the +/- yardage to the middle.

Looking at colin morikawa's Hole 12 from his yardage book (hopefully uploaded) and comparing to the VPAR app, the vpar app says to the centre of #12 from the right tee is 145yds (middle of green between the bunkers) which matches the number shown on the image of the tee.

The other 2 yardages listed in Morikawa's book from the right tee are pretty much bang on to the front left black dot and the front right black dot (tho I'm not sure about this as Front & Rear makes more sense). I assume the left tee is similar (155 to the middle, & the other numbers to the left and right black dots).

VPAR also agrees that #4 is 170 to the middle from the short tee, matching the image. The distances to the dots on the green seem pretty much there too.

The markers are also needed on par 4 & par 5 tees for tee shots to a fairway as players will be trying to hit to lay up distances. So in a similar way the player must be able to work out the distance to a 'target' part of the fairway, depending on where the tee is on the day. They are probably told the distance from the tee plaque to markers or points down the fairway - they can then do the maths.

That's my guess.

this is fantastic! really appreciate you digging this up and providing some additional commentary. your guesses also make a lot of sense. e.g. #12 is bang on.

unless anyone has some late additions i'm going to consider this case closed. thanks again!!
