Flying into Eugene late....looking for a cheap town to stay no more than 1 hour from Airport

Hey Gang,

 

I will be flying into Eugene in June about 10:30 and want to find some cheaper lodging about 30 minutes to an hour out of Eugene.  Any recomendations about towns that are reasonable safe and place that might be budget friendly where I can crash one night prior to going to Bandon.  I also want to enjoy the scenic drive from Eugene to Bandon as I have heard its great and dont want to drive to far from the airport and miss it in the dark.  Am I overthinking things or is the drive not that cool?

Cottage Grove would be worth checking, but I would think you could find something in Eugene given the lack of U of O events taking place this year.

The drive definitely scenic and worth seeing, though I wouldn't skip a round of golf to get it in.  Stay in Cottage Grove, a bit south of Eugene on I-5.  You'll want to take the Hwy 38 route over to Reedsport, not Hwy 126 over to Florence.

I was looking at staying in Reedsport....does that seem like a decent option although it is a bit far from the airport.  Would I still see a lot of nice scenary?

Reedsport is quite a bit out of the 30 min range.  it's a pretty small town - your options for a motel would not be vast.  If you're driving that far, you'll not only miss the real scenic part of the drive, but you might as well push on the remaining distance to Bandon and stay in town there.

 

Depends on whether you want to drive along the coast or drive through the countryside.  The drive time from Eugene to Bandon is pretty much exactly the same taking either 126 and 101 or I-5 and Hwy 38.  Both end up in Reedsport, where you take 101 south to Bandon, and that last part is not a spectacular part of the drive (i.e., not much ocean viewing).

 

126 goes through forestland until Florence, then there's some beautiful coast driving down to Reedsport.  If that's the drive you like, then stay on the west side of Eugene (I think there's a Hampton Inn not far from the airport on W 11th)

38 meanders through some gorgeous bucolic valleys and there's a big elk viewing area near the end.  If that's what you'd like, then stay in Cottage Grove in one of the motels by I-5 (about 20 minutes from the airport).

With all due respect, there are no coastal views at all on the drive from Florence to Reedsport.  If you take 126 from Eugene to Florence thinking you're going to get nice coastal views south of Florence, you'll be sadly disappointed.

Coming from Seattle, we used to drive or fly to Eugene the night before to meet our buddies coming from CA, spend the night and finish the drive in the AM.... This year we stayed at the Red Lion in Coos Bay then finished the 30 min drive to Bandon in the morning. It was significantly better than doing the drive from Eugene area the morning of our first day at Bandon. Not sure where you are coming from but banging out as much of the travel as you can before you get there is very much worth it. No views on the drive from Eugene to Bandon will beat the views once you are on property

DOH!  I stand corrected.  I was thinking of the drive down from Newport.

Just drive down and stay at the Bandon Inn.

Creswell or Cottage Grove meet your requirements.  You'll probably find better deals on hotels in Eugene though.

I decided to just drive to Bandon and stay at the lamplighter in....got a great rate and at least I will be close so I can hit the range etc.

What time is your first tee time the next day?  If it's not super early,  I would honestly just stay in Eugene.  I've had good luck at the Hampton Inn on 11th.  Easy access to 126, I've done similar type logistics, fly into Eugene late, stay there, then drive the next morning feeling rested and ready to go.  That drive is always an adrenaline booster for me.
