Cobra F8 fairway - removing the FIXED weight - is it possible?

Has anyone tried this? If so, what was the outcome? Broken weight/head, or is it possible? I gave it a go with the wrench but no success in unseating the weight after applying reasonable pressure.

 

I play a Cobra F8 3/4 wood with a couple of shafts at 43 - 43.25 inches and really like it but would like to try a shorter shaft and loft it up to give me some bag flexibility.

 

Exploring this before going down the lead tape/tip weight etc options.

 

Any experience with this to share will be appreciated.

I'm not aware of any F8 models that had a fixed weight.

 

If the weight is stuck you'll need to completely remove the screw and then pry out the weight using screwdriver in the hole.

They're removeable in the drivers but fixed in the fairways & hybrids. They look like the moveable weights from the drivers but they're not - they're fixed. I don't know what the structure beneath the weight is. It isn't a removeable weight that is stuck (wish it was).

 

Cobra has done this in some fairway models in the F8 series and Fly-Z series. Maybe it saves weight/cost but I'd prefer the flexibility of being able to change the weights.

I'm not aware of an F8 ' S' what is that?

 

I have a an F8 3/4 fairway - not an S (I think), and not a plus +. I've read maybe a dozen reviews and read the manual. As an example here is the text for this club from the Cobra website https://www.cobragolf.com/king-f8-fairway

 

"BACK CG WEIGHT POSITION
A fixed weight positioned low and back results in a high, towering ball flight that is extremely forgiving."

 

Note that it says fixed weight, not removeable which is the terminology Cobra uses with its drivers.

 

Mine is the image that you have posted above (but all black, not the nardo grey color scheme) and yes, the weight (and have a screw (looking?) interface) looks identical to the driver weights, which are removeable - I game an F8+ driver and change the weights occasionally depending on what shaft I am playing. So visually they look like they will be removeable but according to the reviews, Cobra website and the Cobra manual, it is a fixed weight in the fairways, both in the F8 and F8+ models.

 

I can insert the wrench into the screw interface but no budging and I guess if the weight is fixed then that is understandable.

 

I guess I am hopeful that the weight is only fixed by Cobra by glue into a screw interface and therefore I can somehow remove it and then I have a removeable weight port so I can experiment. Seems unlikely though.

 

I don't want to apply extreme force and break the weight away from whatever fixing to the head or worse still damage the head.

 

Guess I am just trying to learn from anyone that has tried to address this issue and what they discovered.

Is the added weight something you want to be permanent with the shorter shaft?  You can add hotmelt in the head to get it where you want weight wise.  There are hotmelt kids online that you can buy that are fairly easy to use.

 

Start with lead tape, and once it's where you want it, weigh it, and add that much weigh to the head.

I don't want to go down the hot melt track - I want the flexibility of playing different shaft lengths and lofts with the club.

That is interesting but it can't be correct as Cobra themselves state that the fairway weights are fixed not removeable. Lots of varied info in the comments on that page.

 

Everyone, can we please leave alone trying to prove that the weights are removeable based on web research - I have the club and know how to use a wrench - it is fixed, its not stuck. I bought the club new from a retailer one month ago. I've read the manual, website and a dozen reviews all stating that the weights are fixed. My only further thoughts on this is that maybe the US market has one other variant with removeable weights (I am in Australia) but even that isn't supported by the other US/UK/Cobra.com web info. Maybe Golfworks has not been accurate with their description?

 

What I am seeking is someone that has physically dealt with this issue and what they discovered, although I suspect I won't find one. I can contact Cobra but expect them not to be prescriptive as they won't want me breaking the club - I guess I may have to contact them and see what they say, anyway.

 

Again, thanks for input but I think this will have to come from someone that has directly dealt with this.

Fixed doesn’t mean can’t be removed. Fixed meaning it can’t be moved forward/back/sideways etc.

Ok.....I didn't read it that way and I guess if Golfworks are correct that would point to the weights being removeable.

 

I'll be really, really happy to be absolutely wrong in my interpretation.

 

I'll try some silicon spray/WD40 etc and see if I can get it to budge.

The weight or screw is most likely held in place by some loctite.  You may need to apply a little heat to get it loose.

Well I got it wrong - with a little spray of lubricant I was able to remove the weight - my bad but I am happy that I now can experiment with different set-ups.

 

Mea Culpa, I feel a littlke foolish and just didn't interpret correctly and when I couldn't get the weight removed without the lubricant I feared it was unremovable and didn't want to damage the head.
