Modus 105 stiff launching too high - Options when irons are new

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased Srixon Z585 irons with Modus 105 stiff flex.  I got a really good deal and hit them well on the launch monitor.

I am now 4 rounds in with them and I am launching them very high and losing distance.  I went to the Titleist fitting day and they put me in a T200 with Project X 6.0 shaft and it really seemed to be launching at a great height.  I asked at the retail outlet I got the irons from about switching the shafts and was basically told it would cost too much to do.

Anyone have any suggestions?  I cant afford new ones and selling the Srixons I would lose too much money.  Am I better to play with what I have and get re-fitted properly in a couple of years?

Cheers

The shaft and head differences will certainly contribute to different launch and spin characteristics. In addition, the T200 irons have one degree less loft in the 7 iron through PW than the Z585s. That would also contribute to hitting them further. You could bend the Z585s one degree stronger (lower the loft), but note that each degree of decreased loft will decrease your bounce by one degree. My suggestion would be to Start with just one degree of change and see if that helps. Having a whole set bent should be $30 or so.

What were you playing before this set (head and more importantly the shaft)?

Do you have any actual numbers from the new set?  club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin?  Dont' forget to tell us which iron it came from.  Any numbers from the previous set?

Get some lead tape and try adding it incrementally to the head  ~2gm at a time.  No guaranties, but sometimes adding weight to the head (increasing the swing weight) can help delay the release and decrease the dynamic loft delivered.  It can possibly make up for the fact that the shaft weight might be too light for you.   It actually couldn't hurt to get the swing weights actually checked in case there was some issue in the factory.

Other than that, it's pretty easy and inexpensive to get the lofts strengthened in the set and no reason to stop at 1*, go ahead and  try 2* or 3* if that's what it takes.   If you really are hitting them too high then you don't have anything to worry about the reduction in bounce from bending.

I was using M2 Tour with True Temper XP 95 S300 Shafts for my previous set.

I didn't get the numbers when I got the Srixon - At the Titleist fitting, I was hitting the 7 iron.

I am going to get the 2* done to my Srixon and then try some lead tape once the range reopens (covid has the range here closed except for 30 min before your round to warm up).

Thanks for the help.

The PX's are very different shaft from both the xp95's and the nippon 105's - both in stiffness and in weight.   So the shaft certainly could be contributing to the high ball flight results.   The swing weight adjustment and loft adjustment still might help a little but it would more than likely only be a band-aid at best if the PX's really are a better fit for you.

I understand money is an issue but you might want to keep an eye out for a set of PX shafts on the used market (here in the BST or on ebay).

Thanks. I am watching for some shafts but was quoted $30 per shaft to install so at that price it’s cost prohibitive. I will check in at my club to see if they offer the service and the cost.

That is a bit steep (IMO).   Another option is that you could start a thread asking if there are any hobbiest here in the forum in your area that might be willing to help out for less.   Reshafting steel is about as easy as it gets when it comes to club building efforts.

Thanks for the help.  I will see what they offer at my local club and then go from there.
