Putter Lie Angle

Your hands are higher than "standard". This may be because you're tall or just that you keep your hands high and possibly closer to the body. By having your putter 2-3* upright the sole of the putter will sit flat on the ground and simplify hitting straight(er) putts.

Some have their putters (like myself) 2-3* flat (67 or 68*) because we have our hands lower.

Typically, if the heel is high, putts will tend to go more right. If the toe is up, they will tend to go left.

Not sure your last statement is true. With such little loft, lie angle doesn't effect starting line very much. Might effect results (as in, ball in hole) over very long lengths, like.... 40ft or something.

One way to know if what I wrote is true.

One putter, 3 balls, 10 feet That's all it takes.

Hit your putter in your normal position to a target.

Hit the next putt with your hands 3" lower than your "normal" hand position to the same target.

Hit the next putt with your hands 3" higher than your "normal" hand position.

You may be the exception who hits the first ball with the next two without manipulating the stroke.

Mr Maltby of GolfWorks seems to believe it matters.

It matters a lot more to aim and strike quality than it does to starting line, which is influenced a lot more by face angle relative to target line. The more loft on the club, the more lie angle influences starting line and ball flight. I'm not saying lie doesn't matter but when it comes to missing putts left/right, face to target at impact makes the most difference (and obviously strike location effects that).

Do you really think putting greats like Steve Stricker would lift the heel off the ground if it made him a worse putter?

And... just in case you don't believe me, maybe you'll believe Tom Wishon

Perhaps you didn't read what you posted in full. I'll help.

"But if you are going to be 2-3* off from your perfect lie, it's better for that mistake to happen with the DRIVER than with any other clubs in the bag. ESPECIALLY THE PUTTER."

Better the driver than any club in the bag.... Especially the putter.

Better the driver than any club in the bag.... Especially the putter.

Better the driver than any club in the bag.... Especially the putter.

I began building and playing Wishon clubs and participating in his forum in 2005. I still have every catalog since then. I've read his books. I believe there are few who have truly changed the industry as he has. Before Tom, no one was talking about MOI. Arnie Palmer called his home one holiday to discuss COR on a holiday so he would be informed when he gave his testimony to the PGA. No one used variable face thickness on irons before Tom, or changed the spacing and depth of grooves to impart spin after the 2010 rule until YEARS after Tom Wishon did it.

You obviously disagree and I frankly don't much care about that. That you are clearly intent on being disagreeable, well, that's another matter.

For the record, I DON"T believe you, nor agree with you. I DO believe Tom Wishon when he said ....

"Better the driver than any other club....Especially the putter".

johnmess, disregard the dispute over the significance of putter lie. It matters. A LOT! Enough that you went for a putter fitting.

The putter is a much smaller stroke than any other club in the bag and the hole is only 4.25". If the putter is not soled flat, the chance that alignment is off is increased, resulting in missed putts.

I used to have standard 70 degree lie, and my starting line is always right. Now I got fitted and have my putter bend to 74 and sinking every putt. It's my personal experience but it is very true that putter's lie angle is important. I don't know if it is truly because lie angle changed my face angle, but I do know that my aim is much better. So maybe consider this as changing your top-down view of the putter and that will help you aim you starting line better.

Need to go up, if the the length is correct.  If you are going to cut it down or extend it, do that first before adjusting the lie angle.  Just my understanding of it all
