Is it acceptable to play slow if you are scratch?

What's funny is that when I play with fast high hcp'ers, I often think if they just spent 30 seconds analyzing the shot in front of them, their game would improve, and thus their pace of play

 

Like, you just skyed a drive and now have 250y to the green. Trying to nuke a 3-wood isn't the play when there's a 50/50 chance we're going to have to look for that ball in the woods. 

 

But sure, I'm the slow one for reading a 10ft putt.

How do you know they *can't* do it, and that their short irons/wedge are the WORST part of their game if you're thinking "lay up"? 😉 - says the guy that did this very same thing yesterday on a par 5 and was on the back of the green in 2, missed eagle putt by 1 inch and had a 3 inch tap in bird. 

Sure, I'm not a "high capper - but then again, higher than you still", but for one to assume they shouldn't even TRY is a bit of a "holier than thou" attitude. I've always been a strong wood/hybrid player because in general, they have high bounce and I'm more of a sweeper, so the times where I'd dig, the bounce would kind of save me. It's the short irons/wedges I used to have a really hard time with, (and kept me solidly in the mid-cap for a long time) especially with soft ground and no bounce, the leading edge digs in and what happens then?  😉
