I go Driver Five Wood then a bunch of G710.  the 710 is sold as an iron but really what is the difference in their construction vs a hybrid,

The 710 iron is a hybrid on a diet thus "looks" like an iron.

I carry no woods or hybrids but the Ping Crossover really is another hybrid on a diet too. I played hybrids for a few years and hit them well, chipped from light rough with them, etc.

Just never liked the look of a bulbous club head, hit the crossover better, looks like an iron even though its really a "hybrid."

I’m a sweeper and have always been more comfortable hitting fairway woods.  I tried hitting hybrids but to me the results were similar to irons.  I’ve read that hitting hybrids requires a swing similar to hitting irons so that makes sense.

I gradually started eliminating irons and replacing them with fairway woods, my strongest iron is my G710 39 degree 9 iron, my 90 yard carry club.

Sorry... I just found this thread and had to put my 2 cents in.

In my opinion the entire golf swing is built around a 7/8 iron, I really don't see the point of completely removing all the clubs that the game is built around.

There's tonnes of iron options for slower swing speeds and those that require all the help that's possible.

For me, it’s because I can hit my 11 and 13 woods better than my 7 and 8 iron.  I lay up to hit my 13 wood into greens, my 120 yard carry club.

if you’re playing one-length, maybe (and that is the whole premise of that club design). While I certainly grooved my swing as a kid with a 7-iron, each club has a slightly different swing. Sure, the major moves are the same but the details change as shaft length changes - let alone the lie you’re hitting from, etc.

fwiw I originally wasn’t referring to SGI solutions. More about people who hit wedges really well and the top of the bag really well but for whatever reason, struggle with iron approaches. Lots of different swings and games out there, and lots of different ways to configure a set.

  • 8 months later...

I am now in my second season of doing this. I have a Callaway xr speed Driver, callaway fairway woods like 2016 ish models a callaway x 3 hy an older Powerbuilt hybrid like 2013 ish 2 kirkland wedges a tommy armour putter and the only iron in my bag is a lady strata 7 iron I bought in a used bin at a local pro shop which I use close to the green. I sometimes chip with the 4hy. I can drive the ball about 175-180 but avg 150-160. I can hit the 5 wood 150 but typically 120 ish. I've been trying to improve my short game most of all, I have never made great contact with any iron lower than 8. But honestly I've been putting in some work and feel like I m not far from where I want to be which is a bogey golfer.
