1.5 years into the sport - key areas to focus on pls

Recommended Posts

First picked up a golf club 1.5 years ago. Previously I have played a few other ball sports (Waterpolo, Tennis, Football) to a high level so I am sure they are inputting into all my faults. And golf has been one of the more difficult transitions that I have made to say the least.

Distance I am not too concerned about, and would happily trade some for consistency.

At my stage I would really appreciate hearing about the big things that I need to focus on for my swing and get right before I lock in too many bad habits.

Strikes are good when they are good, but very inconsistent. Not ideal.

Misses - no huge pattern. But gun to my head I would say main miss is straight and left, 20-30 yards, if I don't hit it straight. Sometimes hook, sometimes push right.

Personally I would like to be able to get my weight onto my left before I swing, but cannot seem to. Had a few days were I felt like I was, and it felt like I had all the time in the world for the downswing.

New to the site so lets see how it goes ))

Many thanks in advance.

Do you have a face on view?

Hey BrianMcH.. thanks for the request - Ill head out to the range tomorrow and take both the DTL and FOV. I feel like I am changing my swing constantly so hopefully the two angles will give a better combined view of my swing.

Ill revert shortly.

Many thanks.

In your initial takeaway your hands move away from your body towards the ball.

The shaft then shallows out, the but end pointing at the ball when your left arm is parallel with the ground.

Then when you transition and start the downswing, your shaft is a little steep. You then have to compensate in the downswing to try to shallow the shaft to make good contact or you’ll stick the club behind the ball or really pull it left.

You want your swing to have the opposite look. You want to be steeper in the backswing and shallower in the downswing.

Heres a good video by Eric Cogorno on some backswing checkpoints. Work on these backswing drills, and record yourself doing them to make sure they are right.

As a beginner, the most important things to work on would be your grip, set up and ball position. You have a good set up from the DTL view.

A lot of beginners will adjust their grip, set up and ball position to try to compensate for poor swing mechanics. That just leads to constant frustration and stagnation in improvement. Then they have to undo everything to try to get better.

Whenever you practice always set up a station. Lay a club on the ground for your aim and one for you ball position. I use some sidewalk chalk to draw lines when hitting off artificial turf like your hitting off of in your videos.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Ok this will take more time than I thought )) anyway I think I am moving in the right direction. I am dropping my left shoulder in my original video I now see. And It was impossible to bring hands back and behind whilst doing this. So I am trying to go back and up with my right side instead. All the work I was doing on trying to pause at the top and let the right elbow drop under has stopped obviously, but I will get back to that when the take away paths look better. It was too hot for a front view I was done at that point. Except to say I have to work on transition to left leg and pushing my left side back but that can wait for another day. Will keep updates coming. Many thanks for all your help.

I know it's easy to become obsessed with the full swing, but I recommend focusing on the short game.  Or at least devote a good portion of practice time to pitching, chipping, and putting.  To me this is the most crucial part of a good player's game.  The ability to get up and down will shave several strokes per round off your score.

Good luck on your golf journey!

Trying to stay more centered and behind the ball a bit more. I feel it is a bit quick. And I want to keep my left arm straight and slow transition

It indeed did... so here's what I see from face-on.

Your hands are forward pressed a little far for my liking, but to each their own. What really concerns me is your first take-away move: you do nothing but bend your wrists, you need to be rotating your shoulders and pulling the club away while keeping your wrists static.

Here you are at club parallel, nothing must to write home about except the wrists, it leads me to believe if you get sloppy you'll take the club away way too far inside. Then here's arm parallel, you seem to lost balance and your upper body starts to desync and come forward...

image.png.4e5acaa1c7a8479ecbeeed6ca68fd955.png

Here you are at your moment of transition, weight has been kept forward, which starts to show why it's an issue at impact; your upper body is now bailing and coming back, away from the target.

My two takeaways for you based on this is to slightly widen your stance to help you coil/uncoil and eliminate the de-sync you're getting from the sway. Other is to start your swing with your shoulders, not your wrists.
