Breaking the pane of glass

Recommended Posts

I've changed my setup to stand closer to the ball, and I'm really trying to tilt my shoulders more vertically, ie left shoulder down starting the backswing.

It feels like I have to reroute ie flatten on the downswing, I'm probably not, just feels that way, and my iron shots are now pretty great tbh.

Almost feels like it would be impossible to have my hands too high.

Is breaking the pane even a thing? Surely only hyper mobile people can disconnect their shoulder sockets enough to worry about their arms getting above the shoulder plane?

Does DJ or Bubba break the pane?

Was breaking the pane more about not putting too much spin on the older balls?

(Next bit not for those of a nervous disposition)...

Is that bit of Hogan still relevant to the modern game?

Was Hogan talking about breaking the pane on the backswing, downswing, or at any time? (I don't recall.) Seems to me there's a lot of current instruction that emphasizes not "hitting the wall" on the backswing, but shallowing on the downswing.

Good question, I did look this up before posting... to be honest a more knowledgeable student of five lessons can chip in, but the interpretations I've seen talk about both backswing and downswing.

I'm considering that breaking the pane on the backswing has no downside.

I think there's plenty of downside to sucking the club inside under the p(l)ane on the way back. Tends to lead to a lift with the arms and an over-the-top move.

Yep, and I suspect I've been exaggerating that move inside more than I thought in an attempt to stay beneath the plane.

No.  According to Hogan, if you break the pane, you are off plane.  He wants the shoulders to turn on the angle of the pane of glass set at address, more "disastrous" being bringing the arms and club above this plane, thereby shattering the glass.  Bubba and DJ just start on a steeper plane than Hogan, but all three of their lead arms point directly at the ball in line with the angle of their shoulder plane at the top of their backswing.  DJ takes it wide, so potentially his clubhead could break the glass, but he is on plane at the top.  Every golfer has subtle variations, but Hogans idea of coming in to the ball under plane is something that better golfers tend to do.

I can certainly see how Bubba gets back on plane there - Phil doesn’t - so I think what I’m concluding is that for me, and, er, Bubba, going wide and steep on the backswing is no problem because of rerouting on plane from the top.
