Gearhart Golf Links?

Anyone recently play Gearhart Golf Links? I have watched a few recent youtube videos and it seems like an interesting course. The course is not too far from me (90 minutes) but have never played it. Any thoughts on the course?

Oldest course west of the Mississippi, or some such claim.  It was renovated a couple years ago, and they took out most of the trees so that it will be more like the original design. The layout winds through a dune-scape, and the turf is fescue on sand, so it plays fast.  Fun course.  Tiny greens and very walkable, as you would expect from a course built in 1880-something

 

McMenamins hotel/pub attached, also recently expanded.  Spendy to stay (~$250/night) and play ($100/round), which makes it an only once in a while thing for me.

Played there 2-3 years ago on a trip to Cannon Beach. I played early and as a single on a foggy/marine layer morning. Not many folks out there then but Gearhart has received lots more attention since No Laying Up has visited a few times and The Golfer's Journal have hosted events there. 

 

Fun course, very walkable, very small greens. No real views or the dramatic landscape like you get at Bandon since it is a block or two off of the beachfront but it is worth it to play. The "Clam Bed" putting course & bar was brand new when I was there but I didn't have time to enjoy that. I'd like to spend a day there with some buddies to play 18-36 and hit the "Clam Bed" for some post round drinks and putts.

 

Next time I make a trip down there, I'll be going back to play Gearhart for sure. For what it's worth, I have heard Manzanita Links is a fun 9 hole track but I haven't played it.

Absolute blast to play

Especially if ya staying there, just hang out and go to sand trap and enjoy the sunset and drinks.

For Lodging, check out the condos across the street.  Many to choose from, likely cheaper especially if you're with a group.

I liked Gearhart a lot. Not a great golf course but good fun and a perfect stopover for us en route to Bandon. Don’t miss the bar upstairs from the pro shop. Hyper cool.
