Prior to heading southwest for the winter, I  hit the 223 against the i230 in my clubs simulator alot.   The i230s look better behind the ball to me.  To me the i230 blade is a hair longer but behind the ball it doesn’t look that way.  This is coming from a guy who is sensitive to long blade length and offset.  Performance wise the 7i’s are really close.  The 223 feel slightly better when hit well but it is pretty close to me.

Other than being a ho there are a few reasons why I am making a switch (more on that later).  A lot has to do with prior i210 experiance. I had a set of i210’s that I gave a 2 month try last winter and ultimately bought 223’s because the 223 7i carried the number I wanted 160-165 as apposed to the i210 that was a really consisent 155 carry  for me.   The 223’s were new too.  The i230’s are dead even with 223 and consistent on distance.

I also feel like I played better with the i210’s.  The short irons look better and for some reason they are just better IMO.  I am really hoping the i230’s are the same.  I don’t know what it is but Ping makes a really good short iron.  I definitely noticed that the long irons are more forgiving.

So I am kinda extrapolating a lot of i210 stuff to the i230s. I’m getting fit on the 28th.  Totally expect the 223s to get kicked out of my bag. Trying to keep an open mind about other option as the last time I probably made the wrong decision when I chose the 223 over the i210.  Excited to see if a graphite shaft can work as my elbow was a problem 2 years ago and I want to avoid future issues as I near 50.

Please keep us updated on this!

i230’s are ordered.  Graphite shafts launched really high and were a no go. Hitting the 6i outdoors on grass it seemed to be a larger difference than the 7i on a mat.

Hopefully I’ll have them in a week and can report back some on course feedback.

I have been saying that that the i230 is what the 223 was trying to be.

what graphite shafts did you try?

what set up did you end up going with?

I'm trying to remember the Graphite shaft that launched so high - it was not a model I had heard of but I know it was heavier because the fitter wasn't putting me in anything under 105. I know it wasn't the Dart 105 because I asked about it and they didn't have it. I thought we grabbed the aerotech off the rack but I don't remember hitting it.  The fitter may have just abandoned graphite.

I ended up going with the Accra iSeries Steel 115 which by far was my favorite.  I am coming from a Modus S 115 in the 223's.  The weird thing was the Modus S 105 really felt light to me.  I went standard loft 4-PW, 1 degree upright on the lie angle which was a bit of a surprise.

I hit a couple 6i out on the toe and the carry drop off was 5 yards which seems much better than the 223's. I'm with you in that I think these are what I was hoping the 223's would be.  I'll have to hit some 4i and short irons to really reach a verdict.  I'm expecting a more uniform set and better gapping.  I'll reiterate that I thought the difference in the 223 vs i230 6i outdoors seemed more evident than 7i's indoors.

The feel is different.  I think the i230's feel very good, they are less harsh on miss hits but I could still tell where I missed one.  The 223's do feel better to me on pure strikes but I the i230's are very good. I did hit the new P770's.  It was not a shock that the spin drop off was dramatic.  Just more confirmation that hollow body irons are not a fit for me. What was a surprise is that I did not like the feel at all.

tried some irons in the modus 105S….. to light and soft. was all o er the place.

I played the 223 in 115S shafts. Those shafts were a little too soft, decent flight, but too spinny.

I have another set of irons with 115X SSx1…. These are a little too stout. Consistent, but just can’t get them to activate enough.

my i230 have the modus 105x and they seem just right. Good mid ball flight. Spin seem reasonable.

i do also have a set with modus 130S and really like those. They launch higher. Spin the lowest. Creates a very solid ball flight. The a strong and stable, but have an activate kick at impact. The 105x a more linear. 115s felt to soft in the middle.

the 130 play lighter and feel counter balanced. The 130S almost feel like the DGx100 to me…. The profile is different, but they are my two best shafts …. The 105x is the best lighter weight shaft I have played at 113g.

as for the i230….. most consistent iron I have ever hit. Going to be head to head with my i59…. Which is also crazy consistent.
