PING Eye 2 Lite Irons--ever hear of 'em?

I bought a set of Eye 2 irons.  I knew they were Eye 2 Lites, but I had none of the details...evolution, size, etc.  So I wrote to PING and learned something not only about the Lites, but also about the BeCu heads.  Here is what those amazing folks wrote back:

 

"Thank you for contacting PING! In 1984, the Eye 2 Lites and the Eye 2 Beryllium Copper heads were introduced. BeCu is a little more dense than stainless steel, so in order to not make the clubs too heavy, the overall dimensions of the BeCu heads where slightly smaller than the standard stainless steel heads. So there was a smaller mold used for BeCu heads. The Lites are the smaller BeCu mold, but made with stainless steel. The Lite came out a few swing weight points lighter than the standard stainless steel Eye2's because they were slightly smaller. There was, and still is, a large portion of the golf market that prefers using lighter clubs, so the Lites helped in that area. If you have any additional questions about them. Never heard of these. Most interesting. I always liked the look of the BeCu heads and now I know why.

I owned a set in 1984 (knowingly).  Found them to be too light for me at the time.  Since I've aged a bit since then, I kinda wish I still had them.

Was part of the Dave Pelz superlight club phenomenon in the 80s.  Everyone produced a set of light clubs.  I have a Golden Ram clubhead that is one of the lights, the muscle is hollowed out somewhat.

 

Lasted a couple years and that was that.  🙂

Yes the featherweight craze was indeed short lived. And for good reasons. I remember selling many sets when I worked for Nevada Bob's Discount Golf. Every manufacture was jumping on the bandwagon. Some of those iron sets had swingweights from B-8 to C-2. One of the most ridiculous design concepts to come out of the eighties. And there were many.

Yes I’m familiar.  I have 3 sets of becu eye 2’s in my collection.    Great clubs.

 

 

the overall lite phase by manufacturers wasn’t very successful as others stated.  I did buy a MacGregor syncrolite persimmon driver……bought  new and still have it. A Great head

Can't wait to try the slightly lighter and smaller Eye 2.  The size is why I like the BeCu irons, they're smaller....although they do feel harder.

Does anyone know how lighter they are compared to standard Headweights?

Working from memory here, as I recall the standard EYE2 swingweight was C8, and the swingweight for the EZ Lite version was C0.

 

Not sure if the shaft in the EZ lite was lighter, so I don't know how much of the reduction in swingweight was due to the head weight and how much was due to the shaft weight.  Considering both were steel shafts, the difference has to be mostly in the weight of the clubheads.  A change of 2 grams affects the swingweight by 1 point.
