Naomi Osaka

As we all know Naomi Osaka has been very vocal about mental health lately and I think it's good to normalize talking about stuff like this. She's also said that talking to the press makes her nervous and she doesn't get any satisfaction from winning. Very understandable and I found it refreshingly honest.

 

The thing that catches me off guard is she keeps on doing magazine shoots and interviews with places like HBO? She embraces good press when it comes her way, but as soon as she is criticized by the press she plays the victim card. You'd never see Tiger Woods do anything like this in his prime. Seems kind of hypocritical

It's refreshing yes, I get that. But at the same time this is getting very trendy. There's a point where we need to not stigmatize issues we all go through but also not place those on a pedestal either, because when you do the genuineness of the struggle is often lost.

Unfortuantly , we’re starting too see these things pop up (no nedia) as players sign media exclusive deals.

 

the exclusive media deals are gonna ruin media for us IMO , but will never fault someone for not wanting to talk to media or wanting to make a $ either

I don’t see much conflict in what she’s saying.  There’s a huge difference between a photo shoot, sit down interview for a written article, or a one on one TV interview, versus a room full of press, microphones, and cameras asking critical questions right after an event.

I don't know man...I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for these folks. Oh, their lives are sooooooo hard. Boo hoo.

 

All of us would be better off if we just stopped caring and took a nice walk.

Interesting idea.  Until 1,000 people on that walk treat you like Naomi Osaka and stop you to ask why you double faulted in the 2nd set when you had a chance to go up a break in the set.

 

The truth is some of us can take that walk, and some of us can’t.  And, some of us fear having a panic attack on that walk for no reason we can clearly identify.

Yeah man, I'm talking about those 1,000 people you mention. Those people need to get lives.

 

Additionally, Osaka could (and has) walked away from competitive tennis before. Perhaps she just doesn't have what it takes to be a major professional athlete. That would make her roughly equal with about 99.9% of the population. Again, boo hoo. Life is sooooo hard.

 

Seriously, if playing tennis sucks so bad, then go do something else. I'm reasonably certain she isn't going to be hurting for money or job offers.

Such a sensitive subject. On one hand you want to be sensitive towards someone that just might have genuine mental health issues. On the other hand you want to say, boo-hoo you’re making millions of dollars playing a sport for a living. Suck it up snowflake. So I think it depends a lot on each individual situation. I’m not privy to Naomi’s mental health situation/diagnosis, so I’ll refrain from judging her.
