GW bent to PW loft

Long story short,

  I recently put together a JPX 919 Forged GW (51*) that I have come to like ( only had a week or so). I have been unable to find a JPX 919 Forged PW for awhile. I was thinking I could grab another GW ( couple heads only for sale at a local shop) and have it bent. I assume the bounce would be one of the things i would be messing with? as in the bounce of a PW is different than a GW? Any pro's or con's to the above? 

 

Long Story, 

 I'm looking to replace my current sets (2018/9 Hogan Edge irons) PW. I previously went back and forth between the Hogan PW (46*) and a ping eye 2 + BeCu PW (48.5) that i'm noticing is it is getting pretty beat up as of late. I used the Ping PW most of the time like 90% of the time.   I originally set out to bend the JPX 919 GW to my current PW (48). As i hit the GW i really liked it at 51* and was  i would get another and bend it to the PW loft and keep one GW as it is.  

I hit the Hogan and the Ping pretty much the same with the Ping having better dispersion and overall more confidence with. ( all feeling/course data not actual trackman data). 

The gapping of the Hogan set is a 42* 9, 46* PW. Normally i would use the ping at 48.5 instead of the 46* hogan PW and just go ping BeCU SW (53.5).  

I'm thinking of going 42*9 and bending one JPX 919 GW to a 46 then having the other JPX 919 GW bent back to 50. In theory it will coincide with my irons sets gapping ( which meant little to me) i'll prob lose the 53.5 SW and just put the 57.5 BeCu LW in the bag.., 

 

Any thoughts appreciated.

If you  strengthen the 51° GW five degrees  to the 46° PW loft, you'll bring back memories of the Black Widow infomercial wedge (negative bounce).

That might work for you, but more likely, it will cause some major league digging.

 

Plus I don't think ANY iron will bend 5° without breaking.  Maybe for lie, although I doubt even that,  but not for loft.  That's not a subtle adjustment!

I would advise against bending a club the full 4 degrees. Severe reduction in bounce, increase in offset, risk of putting a crease in the hosel.

 

What about just buying a specialty PW? Like a 46 Vokey or RTX Zipcore etc.

I could look arround just really liked the JPX so i got the bend idea... any PW out there that mimic the Eye 2 + PW i love?

Also the Ping was a 48.5 would bending it 3.5*'s to match the Ping be a better play than the full 5 to match set gapping. I'm fine with my current gapping.

You could find a newer glide ES sole PW. Correction - does not come in PW loft.

Aren't heads gradually heavier as they move up in loft?  

GW head weight > PW head weight

I'm guessing if you bent the 9iron to PW loft, it will cause leading edge to sit higher, thus leading to lot of thin shots.

My Vokey Gap wedge is 52' has 8' of bounce, which is the same as my 620 MB PW.   The 52' wedge is mostly used for full shots, so bounce being the same as PW works for me.  I tend to be a sweeper anyway.

 

The OP doesn't say what the bounce is on the Gap 51' he's proposing to bend to PW.  It depends, if 51 has 10-12' of bounce, the bend change won't be too dramatic.  However, if it's 8', bending 51 to 47/48 removes a bit of bounce, which likely changes turf interaction and begs the question; how good you are with low bounce?  Are you a digger or sweeper?

 

@mrshinsa Club heads get heavier as they ascend to LW.

Another option is a JPX Tour PW. 

They have lefties on the SEL line, plus I think it will be easier to hit than say a a bladed specialty wedge.

So it looks as if the bounce is 7*. i feel like i need to stick to the PW.

i'll take a look at the JPX SEL line... problem is finding a single PW. I've checked with my local shop the only one they have is gone. (p.s.) pretty sure its the only one on ebay right now...

You should be able to order a single PW if needed.  At least my local golf store lets you.

true... was mostly looking 2nd hand... but as times moves and no PW i may choose to buy new... any ideas on mizuno lead times.

As mentioned earlier, how that works depends on your skill and mechanics. 

The bounce will change degree for degree you bend.  If you bend 4 degrees stronger then the bounce will decrease 4* and vice versa.

Depends on the availability of the head, shaft and grip.   Even if one item is backordered, say a grip, you will get delayed.

 

Ordered a set of T20 wedges on August of 2020, didn't get them till January of 2021.

Ordered a set of 921 Forged, on January 2021, didn't get them till March 2021.  

Ordered another set of 921 Forged on beginning of October, and got them in around 3 weeks.

If you bend a 9 iron to the wedge and it is 4* weaker then the bounce will go up 4* also and the the lie will need to be bent 1/2* up  and also the weight will have to be adjusted up to the weight of the wedge.  I tried this with some 2018 Apex MB's and it did not work. Better of finding a PW.

Doesn't matter what people do.  If you bend it the bounce changes degree for degree.

My son plays competitive golf and we purchase lot of clubs.  

Ordered a set of T20 wedges on August of 2020, didn't get them till January of 2021.

Ordered a set of 921 Forged, on January 2021, didn't get them till March 2021.  

Ordered another set of 921 Forged on beginning of October, and got them in around 3 weeks.

yup times are only things holding me back... although its been like 3 weeks looking 2nd hand so... I lucked out on the head only GW that i paired with a recoil 95. Its what got me into this whole mess...

I just ordered a single customized Mizuno iron through Golf Galaxy (i.e. Mizuno built it and it did not come from Golf Galaxy's warehouse).  Received it 8 days after ordering.

whoa... really, 8 days? hmm.... I've read up on the 921 forged but was looking to stick with the 919 b/c of wait times and 2nd hand as well... I'll do some more research and may just go the 921 rout... Thanks!

 

Any one have any info on the 919/921 forged PW vs. the SEL PW? 

i'll just google it but i take this forums advice over a sales video any day
