Question - putter re-finish with BOS - (updated with new pics)

I found an old Newport Mil-Spec I want to send in to BOS to have re-finished.  How do you know if a putter needs to be re-milled or not?  I've never done this before and am not sure what to ask for.  The top line on the front face of the putter also sticks out a bit over the front face.  If you caught one high on the face this edge would definitely make impact first.  Will they just sand that down or is that a situation where I need to have the face re-milled?

Update - here are the finished pics

Thanks in advance for any guidance.  IMG_3161.jpg.fc8ec1c5489687a274ecd57198cdc05f.jpg

It will be sanded down and they will do a light re-mill of the face.  It looks like it's pretty dinged up and will lose a bit of weight but the nice thing about Mil Specs is they almost always weigh a few grams more than their advertised weight.  I have 3 and they are all between 4-6 grams heavier than what they are supposed to be.  I had a 350g head refinished and when it came back it was still 351 grams.

I sent 4 putters to BOS over the Fall and I was always impressed with the end result and the value of their services

Thank you for the responses.  Just wasn't sure if I should add re-milling to the order form.  Sounds like I can just leave that off and do the removal of finish and then the new finish.

The putter is pretty beat up.  If it were mine, I would have them smooth everything out and re-mill the face.  It will come back looking new.
I honestly wouldn't worry about too much weight loss.  As I said earlier, these are known for being over weight from the factory.
No sense in having a new finish applied to a beat up putter.  Waste of money IMO.
Have them do it up right.  You won't be sorry.

Honestly, the milling doesn't look to bad on that- once the top line is cleaned up I think you'll be pretty happy with it. Also, the great people over at BOS are super helpful, so if you give them a call they can walk you through exactly how it will come out given the different options!

Piggybacking my BOS question onto this thread...

I assume when you send them a putter for refinishing you only send them the head? I have one I'm considering sending them, but the shaft length and grip are so "just right" that I wouldn't want to mess with either of those at all.

You can send the whole putter but they have to remove the shaft to refinish it.

It will cost you more to ship a full putter (with shaft) that it will to simply ship the head.  Plus BOS charges to remove the shaft when they do the refinish.  May as well just remove the shaft (you don't have to mess with the grip at all), send in the head, and reattach the shaft when you get it back.  Juts get some epoxy and you're good to go.

I think my question was interpreted the wrong way haha. If I sent it in to them I would prefer to do it head only. I'd rather remove the shaft and reinstall it myself so that nothing happens to it or the grip.

Sounds like that is the way to go so thanks for the replies!

Yeah probably best because they also charge a few bucks for removal and replacement.

In terms of the re-milling, I think you're safe to send the head and then ask them their professional opinion. I never felt "up-sold" by them. They are honest and will be happy to discuss. They're very responsive and are knowledgeable.

I did have them re-mill it and that finish is the triple black.  It's the one with the shiny sole, satin face and matte black on top.
