How did he get in the field?  Doesn’t show him as a Monday qualifier.  Says sponsor exemption. I guess.

Yes, sponsors exemption.  Mostly due to him playing on the ASU team and he lives in Scottsdale.  Oh, and his dad (Boyd) being the coach for some high level players.  Just my take on how he got in.

I "think" they always tend to give a sponsors exemption to an ASU Men's golf team member. Not sure how they decide, which team member. Rahm played in the WMPO when he was at ASU and the top amateur.

Interesting to see the G410 LST in the bag.  As he has likely been a lifelong PING guy (but not under contract) it's fun to see his bag.  A coupe other G410 notables (Jason Day and Seamus Power)...wondering what keeps them in the G410 vs G425?  I ask because I have a G410 LST and haven't tried the G425.  I prefer the look of the G410 but also want the lower spinning.

I think that is basically how Phil got his first win as a collegiate. Wasn’t that in Arizona pre waste management days?

Thanks, I knew it was in AZ. I think that was basically this event previous to waste management coming in as the sponsor. 

 

The Northern Telecom.. Now there is a sponsor.. .lol..

No, it was to old Tucson Open. The Phoenix Open and the Tucson Opens were Johnny Miller’s domain for a number of years winning both in the same year I think a couple of times

I could be wrong, but I think that event might have been down in Tucson. That event is now a Champions Tour event. Again, I could be wrong but for some reason I remember Phil wearing a conquistador helmet when he won.
