Zero consistency with six way miss.

Recommended Posts

The misses being left, right, thin, fat, shank and occasional toe when tinkering with swing.

Been recently practicing more upright takeaway (so the club doesnt go so deep behind me, didnt work really) in hopes of consistency, but these swings are my "natural" swings.

I have trackman access, and know my numbers pretty well.

Advice, feedback, anything welcome. 🙂

You're stalling your hip rotation worrying about making the face work for you. It's giving you a little bit of a hitch (early extension) and then you're using your arms to try to compensate.

Fire those hips THROUGH the ball. Exit left. Hard.

Look at Rory in comparison:

Hips completely open at impact.

Compare your position at 9:00 going back to that of Tiger at the same position .

Note three differences

1. Your left arm is angled considerably more Tigers

2. Your hands are more towards the middle of your foot ; Tigers is more towards the front of the foot.

3. Your pelvis  is  already very rotated with your right leg almost straight and your left knee obviously bent with considerable space between your knees.

Suggestion

Maintain more of the brace of your right knee going back . This should  result in less pelvic “ rotation” going back,  a less angled lead arm and a hand position more in front of your body

I am not a teacher.  All I see is your body is dropping downward before impact = that ball can go anywhere.

Hi! Thanks for the observation. I think it is something that lower core golfers do a lot to generate power: Rory for example. I dont know for certain if its a good or a bad thing. 🙂

I use my lower body like any other good golfer - big muscles = added power, but I don't drop my body doing it.  Reason I hit the ball straight

I don't really know how to do the "squat" move without dropping, I would have to get out of posture and stand straight to not drop... Any ideas? 🙂

I would focus more specifically on points about hand position and hip rotation per @golfarb1's post above. You're rotating your pelvis so much that you don't have time to really properly unwind it in the downswing. This falls under the category of "match ups" in that a ton of pelvic rotation is normally coupled with some other element that requires a lot of time to sequence e.g. a longer backswing and/or a slightly across the line position at the top. Think Mickelson or Lowry. When you try to match up a ton of pelvic rotation with a normal length or more compact backswing then you can run into the mismatch where your pelvis now needs a lot more time to get into position than your arms/upper body do.

A feel to try is keeping your left hip as still as possible in the backswing and letting your right hip be the sole driver of the rotation. This won't actually happen, your left hip will always move a bit, but right now it is moving a LOT and creating what is sometimes called "false rotation" which is what can happen when we try to make what we think is a full turn with our lower body. Don't confuse this with restricting your hip turn which is what this might feel like, the idea is still to rotate completely, just to restrict that left hip flying out in front of you so much as it just creates a big element that you need to get out of the way in the downswing.

The other element of your backswing mentioned is important too. You mentioned working on a more upright takeaway which we see the beginnings of, but after P2 your hands start flattening and working around behind you. Nothing crazy, but pretty deep for an iron which your brain can easily end up feeling is "stuck" and in a position that needs to be saved/rerouted in the downswing. Combine that with hips that have turned too far and your brain is more in rescue mode coming down which leads to all the inconsistencies.

577474042_karbonaraPath(1).gif.ffa3225acaf981e0d1568460101f36e0.gif

Tracing your hand path back we start to see that curve/flattening halfway back which ends in a position that well behind your right shoulder and behind your trail foot. This would considered very "deep" and arguably too much so for an iron. Rory can have some of the deepest hand positions on tour (mostly with the longer clubs) and if we look at him:

493898691_RoryPath(1).gif.d62ca98e6259ca15d7685626033804a2.gif

His hands work back in a pretty straight line, no flattening halfway back. At the top his hands are lined up with the middle of his right foot, not off behind it like yours are. This sort of position requires significantly less effort to then drop down towards the ball whereas yours does. We can also see the difference in hip turn, specifically the left hip. Rory does have a more compact hip motion overall, but the difference is still relevant here.

EDIT: Added lines to better illustrate hand path.

Thank you for the detailed feedback and advice mr @Valtiel, I already got the pelvis feeling down by maintaining my brace in right leg as I go back, seemed good on video aswell, on my way to test it on Trackman.

And thanks for the thread @berndgeurts, awesome job doing those huge changes. Hope to get mine cleared aswell!

You’ve been given some good advice and you did ask for it so all is fair and my comments below aren’t a reflection of that advice.

But to be honest you’ve got a good swing and look to be reasonably athletic and coordinated. So it wouldn’t take too much to get you back on track and heading in the right direction.  If I was you, I’d go get consistent lessons from a reputable coach that you gel with and stick to their philosophy. It’s easy to get muddled and mixed up when receiving advice from several sources who have different views, thoughts and philosophies.

Just my two cents…

I probably didn't explain it right, and don't usually offer swing advice cause I know my swing is kind of instinctual, and self-taught.

Seems like you're using the squat to create power only it's erratic.  I could be wrong, but dropping affects everything in your swing, including the club face as it comes into the ball, so the ball can go any which way.

Lots of pros now-a-days, like JT are grabbing power though timing as they transition fast, and come up on their toes.  Big muscles but almost fast twitch... Again, I probably should say this, but squatting is a bad habit in hopes of power.

With irons, I maintain my posture, keep my shoulders pretty level.  With driver, my right shoulder is a bit lower.  My swing doesn't reach the top either, a little more than 3/4, quick transition drop into the slot, fire my hips left hard, and use upper body strength to swing hard, down into the ball and though to the right.  LOL that's about the best I can do describing my swing.

Thank you everyone for the feedback, tips and advice!

I did the drills by @Valtiel and @golfarb1 and got something going, much more consistent, shot -5 on Trackman which is great for me 🙂

Still a lot to do, but im happy I now have a clearer path on what to do with my swing.
