Houston Golf Trip Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

We are planning a golf trip to Houston on the second week of November. We are planning on playing: 1. The Wilderness at Lake Jackson 2. Cypress Wood (Both courses) 3. Golf Club of Houston

We're contemplating on swapping either the wilderness or cypress cypress course at cypresswood for Blackhorse.

Any suggestions of other courses in Houston? Also how are the condition of the courses mentioned above?

Our group definitely prioritizes courses with the best conditions.

Thanks!

Wilderness much better than either Cypresswood course. Conditions at GCOH are usually good but it is not a fun layout in my opinion at least - it's a very typical "PGA" style.

Blackhorse is okay, but I wouldn't trade out a round at Wilderness for it.

I'd also consider High Meadow Ranch.

Depending on what you mean by "second week" of November, the Houston Open is happening 11/10-11/13 at Memorial Park. Could add on a day of spectating to your trip.

I used to live in Houston and heading back for 3 weeks mid November to golf and hang out.

I will play -

1 round Cypresswood Tradition - my favourite course there.

1 round Gus Wortham - so fun and cheap.

2+ Memorial Golf Course - Was my home course before I moved away, I still have my residents pass so get it cheap.

1 round at he new 9 holer in the East side of Downtown - looks great fun and can take the entire family!

I do have a week in the middle golfing in Cabo.

Wilderness is great and seeing if one of my friends wants to do a scramble there on November 20.

Cypresswood Cypress course is good after the 4th hole, never play a Saturday there its torturously slow

I like Blackhorse courses but the prices jumped up with Covid and never came down. Golf Club of Houston is nice but same old TPC. I like Cypress lakes for a change, Wildcat is average and not cheap. Iiked TimberCreek and would go back there.

Thanks for the suggestion on High Meadow Ranch. We will be there during the week of the Houston Open but I don't think we will have time unfortunately.

Played Wilderness last week and several of the greens were "iffy". Had brown spots and very inconsistent. I would check out Eagle Pointe In Mount Belvieu. Usually always in good shape and beautiful track. Lots of elevation changes and you can only see houses on a few of the holes. Probably my favorite course in all of the Houston area.

Swap High Meadow Ranch for Golf Club of Houston.  In the few rounds I’ve played at GCOH, there’s never been a round under 5 hours and some approached 6.  The layout is good and conditions were decent, but that was 9 months ago.  Won’t be back.

Blackhorse fails to impress for playing conditions especially for what they charge.

Cypress Lakes is just ok.  A fun round.

Tradition should still be in awesome shape when you get here from pre-quals for the Open.  I played there last Thursday and it was sweet. Cypress is better than expected too.  I play there 2-4 rounds a week.  As stated above, don’t do weekend golf here.

Gus is Gus, always a good round and great conditions.

I’d look at Windrose as a potential alternative or addition.  Been there once and it’s on my play again list.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just swapped The Wilderness for High Meadow Ranch based on the comment from SEP1006. I think we got a pretty good rate at Golf club of Houston for $100. Do you think its worth $100

What happened to Augusta Pines?  I know they were having some grass issues a couple of years ago but still not hearing it mentioned as it is a fun layout.

I am interested as we are trying to decide if we want to play tour 18 or augusta pines.

Similar to above, the last 2 times I've played GCOH pace of play has been so bad I've sworn I'll never go back.

tour 18 is horrendous!

it is one of two I can't stand in Houston; used to cry when friends wanted to play there!

Personally?  I wouldn’t pay $50 to suffer there. Swore them off after following a college team around and waiting 15 minutes on every hole while they played like it was for the US Open title.  On a weekend!

High Meadow and Eagle Pointe are great public courses in good shape most of the times. GCOH, as long as it's in nice shape, is worthy of the $100. They just got done with a Member/Guest recently, so I'm thinking it will be. I heard mixed reviews of Cypresswood Traditions recently, but a fun track.

I have not been in Houston since August last year, disclaimer.

The layout of Tradition is just very fair, play well and you score well, play bad and you score bad. Condition wise after Harvey it has not been the same but to me it's better than most.

To me for all the easy to get on courses, Gus has the best greens. We always finish with a putting contest on the last putting down the hill, keeping it on the green is so hard!

Eagle Pointe is very fun tee to green.  I wish the greens had a little more break.

I'd rate Wilderness ahead of it, although I haven't played either since the Spring so I don't know the current conditions.

Both are nearly an hour away from my house, so I'll play them a handful of times during the year.

I play Gus the most, since it is so close, fun & walk-able.  It will be crowded during the Houston Open with Memorial closed.

The new Memorial is great.  I find the rounds are pretty slow out there.

I've loved Cyp Tradition since it opened.  Played HMR once and was very impressed.

GCOH is challenging.  Don't think about walking it.  I only play it (and Wildcat and Blackhorse) for variety.  My Top 5-6 are listed above.

If you’re up for a drive, I’ve had Moody Gardens in Galveston recommended highly to me by a few locals, but have not played it myself.

My reaction to Moody Gardens was "meh."  The course itself is nothing to write home about.  Constant 20-35 MPH winds would make any course a lot more challenging.

I played Gus on Friday and coming from very good links greens; they were sooooo fast and smooth. Was so impressed, my golf was horrendous though!

Gus is the shiznitz.  Cheap, clean and very well maintained.  Best course in the area IMO.

how are the conditions at high meadow ranch? My childhood friend from new jersey is coming into town and that's where I'm taking him

I live 10 mins away and it has rained quite a bit lately so I'm sure its a bit soggy.  On black friday it was cart path only.  Other than than the course, as always, is in great shape.
