Looking for 7 wood shaft recommendations.

I recently I have been thinking about switching from 3w/5w to 4w/7w and I am half way there. I got a great deal on a TRS2 21 Degree head but I now need a shaft. Most of the golf places around me do not have too many stiff shafts for this head so I was looking for some suggestions based on my other metrics and what I am looking for.

Currently Gaming:

  • Stealth 9.0 with HZRDUS RED SMOKE 60G STIFF
  • M6 3wood with Aldila NVS Green 75G Stiff
  • M6 5wood with Aldila NVS Orange 75G Stiff
  • 5i-PW 2019 P790s with Nippon Modus 120 Stiff

I am currently playing off a 10.3HCP and am I am looking to make some changes. Biggest thing is I don't really feel comfortable with my woods as of now and I am looking to get something easier to launch. I recently got the TSR2 16.5 with Tensei AV Blue 65 Gram stiff to replace my 3wood and I have seen much improved launch and spin numbers. So I am wondering what I should do for the 21 degree head. Should I be looking to add more weight to the 7W? Somewhere around 70-75 Grams? Also is there an ideal length I should be looking for? Should I be thinking about X-Stiff?

I have narrowed my list down to Tensei AV Blue, and HZRDUS Smoke red, but seeing as I cant get my hands on these to test, I might have to bite the bullet and order online and go from there.

I personally would stick with stiff and just go a little heavier. Something in the 80-85g weight range. Maybe check out the Rogue Black, whatever MSI your wallet can handle. Their 80g offering comes in a couple of grams over at 85g in stiff, at least for the 95 MSI version, which can be had real cheap right now.

Something like a 75-80g shaft should be okay. Unfortunately you're in a blind buy situation but my advice is always go with what "feel" you like best... I pay almost no attention to what OEMs say a shaft does.

I've used "low spin" shafts in my fairway woods for years because I tend to not like the feel of the relative difference between a stiff handle and a softer tip, even though common wisdom is that you "need" a higher launching/softer shaft in a fairway. I let the head dictate ball flight and the shaft my timing.

Definitely think about an X, in 80grm IMO. If > 60YOA go stiff.

If you like the AV Blue 65 with improved launch and spin numbers why not just get the AV Blue 75 stiff?  Red would likely launch higher.

The label is just that: a label, so you could game an R/S/X easily if fit properly.

I agree if you have 75g in the other FWs, move up in weight. Older PX Evenflows are 85g for example and not expensive, along with other shafts out there a few years old.  Nothing wrong with playing it shorter, I certainly do as its closer to my 3H replacement then trying to play a bomber FW wood. If doing this, you may need to add some weight back to the head and that could be a reason to get an X vs S in a shaft family, or just tip a shaft a bit more but this is very fine tuning.

Getting the weight right is the first thing 🙂

I think 7 woods can get hooky like hybrids. I like stiffer and heavier in that spot. Lighter and softer as lofts get stronger.

I don’t think anyone here can give you the answer. I’d venture to say this is the area of the bag that has the most variety in preference as to what people game. The low 20s loft area seems fickle in general to me for some reason.

There are a number of fitting questions in there, chief among them where that discomfort is coming from. As with most off the rack woods they are often too long biomechanically speaking. Your stock 45.75" driver, 43.25" 3w, and 42.42" 5w are all easily an inch longer than what is good for most people. If you feel like that resonates then 42"-42.5" on the 4-wood and 41"-41.5" on the 7-wood would be a great place to start. Get some +4g (13g) weights for the head and definitely go up a little in shaft weight for the 7w, the AV Blue 75 seems like a no brainer there. You may even want to go 85g in the 7w, but a lot of that comes down to personal preference.

@Barrington_14

Listen to this advice, at the moment you are moving a bit to fast forward, so to make a qualified guess of what might be a good place to start, you have to fix those issues you might have with the others, so there is a reference to a good club.

When specs for a "good club", that works as it should is found, we can as a quick quideline say, "go 5 grams up in uncut shaft wgt, for each inch shorter play length".

Your "ideal" for shaft wgt progression might be a little off, some players benefit from a steeper total wgt / shaft wgt progression than others, and my suggestion for a starting point, its to the steep end of the scale.
(2-6 grams pr inch is the norm range here)

Use the chart like this.
Find PLAY LENGHT, for a club that really feels and works good
(never mind if the head say anyting else that what yours is, those headers is just labels like "3W", for where we expect it to be.

Now with play length for the "good club found", go to the row that correspond te best with that UNCUT shaft wgt. The rest of your bag (my suggestion), is in the same row, plus minus 1. (5 grams up or down).

I know I’m a little off-topic here, but I think I share your frustration with feeling like you have to buy a shaft just to test it. You named two popular shafts, and it seems to me that the big brand fitters claiming to have 50,000+ combinations should be able to accommodate you. Or maybe you don’t live close to any of them?

Fitting can be tricky if you are super sensitive to shaft profiles...its unfortunate that more shops don't have at least some shorter fitting shafts. Both of my 7W purchases have been CPO clubs where I didn't care a bout the shaft, knowing I was going to swap in mine anyway (which opens up all the ladies stock as well when hunting :D)

For me I just went with a heavier version of my driver shaft which was easy since PX Evenflows are several years old and on the cheap. The weight progression is more important to me, and not easy to find 80+g shafts stock.
