Johnny Miller Comment

South Carolina reader John Gregory Vincent has a problem with Johnny Miller's March Column in which he compares the leaves of absence that tour players take from their families with those of military personnel. Miller wrote:

gd0803_smcover_th.jpg

As a tour player, by far the toughest moment was when I was packing my suitcase to head off to a tournament and my youngest son, Todd, was pulling at my pants leg, pleading, "Daddy, please don't go. Can you stay so we can go fishing?" He followed me to the car, and to this day I can still see him in my rearview mirror trotting after the car, reaching out with his hands, crying. The thought of that still makes
me
cry.

Many people in different walks of life go through the same thing; the thousands of soliders in Iraq with families at home come to mind....

John Gregory Vincent thought the comparison was inapt, to say the least.

Johnny Miller’s “Lesson Tee†page in the March issue caused me to write my first EVER editorial comment in my 46 years. As a retired Navy Command Master Chief and avid golfer I took exception with Mr. Miller’s direct comparison of the impact on the family of the tour player heading out for the week and those of our armed service members ESPECIALLY those today, heading to war. I will concede to a 3 or 4 year-old, gone is gone, but I can assure you that even the little one’s quickly learn the difference between 10 days and 10 months. As for the impact on the older children, spouses, friends and family, please. It’s golf Mr. Miller. There is ZERO comparison to golf and what our service men and woman and their families are experiencing.

Amen to that, the family of a tour player knows dad is coming back. The goodbye from a soldier might be their last.

The whole thing sucks.

The comment sucks, the reaction sucks, the comparison between going to war and going to play golf sucks, it basically sucks from every angle.

There are a handful of topics that need to be basically BANNED from sports writing/commentating. Even if you think it needs to be said, chances are that someone will find offense, so you're just better off NOT saying it.

War, race, politics, sex, if you avoid these subjects, chances are, you'll be safe.

FWIW, I do not agree with JM's comments, there are a hundred other analogies he could have made that didn't compare a golf tournament with a soldier going off to war.

I wondered how long it would take for this to come up. I'm only assuming he never had one of his parents go off to war because I can't imagine someone who had saying something like that. I still remember the first time I realized that someone was trying to kill my dad during desert storm. I only wish he had been out playing golf. Even now that I'm older, I worried about my dad everyday when he was in Iraq for a year.

I agree it's not a good comparison AT ALL. However, maybe his thoughts had good intentions. Maybe , just maybe, he was just trying to give props to thousands in the military...saying, in essence, I know how hard it was for my kids, I can't imagine....

Johnny Miller's a wally - I can't say anymore, it won't do it justice

Translation?

(I love to learn new terms from across the pond or down under!)

Withdrew-

Here are a few sites I use when reading posts from our friends across the pond:

http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/141/dictionary.jsp

http://www.peak.org/~jeremy/dictionary/dic.../dictionary.php

http://english2american.com/

But sometimes I just ask because I am confident the responses from the UK contingent will be far more entertaining that the dictionary definition.

P.S. Miller is an idiot for making that comparison.

Oh give it a rest, I'm sick of Miller bashers who over react to every statement he makes.

His analogy is his, y'all remember freedom of speech.

If he riles y'all so much then don't read or listen to him.

Did he say, my kids had to deal with me leaving for a tournament just like military personnel leaving for a TOD. Don't think so.

If you want to give him a pass, that's fine, but it has zero to do with "freedom of speech."

Kelly Tilghman had freedom of speech too. That doesn't mean that they should say the things they do.

We're at war. There are lots of people that are sensitive about it. He should have used a different analogy.

Miller is definitely an entertaining announcer, and his strongest asset is his lack of a filter. Once in a while he's going to slip and make a remark that crosses the proverbial line. I don't think his analogy was a good one at all, but its one of the inherent hazards of having an announcer with his style.

okay,...how about this for freedom of speech:

it is unbelievable with all that he has accomplished in golf that Johnny Miller remains an extremely bitter and angry man. His petty analysis of golfers who have passed him by is simply poorly disguised jealousy. Good luck to NBC in dealing with this weak and insecure egomaniac.

I agree with you, but the only problem here is that this was a column, so he had plenty of time to think about it, edit it, and it probably went through several hands before going to print.

We're not talking about live TV where you have to babble for 5 or 6 hours, where you could get caught in a bad spot and put your foot in your mouth. This was on paper.

I'm not a Miller hater, and I don't think he needs to be hammered for this, and I don't think he needs to apologize or anything, but I can respect the fact that a lot of people aren't going to dig his analogy.

That pretty much sums it up right there.

He's still stuck on Sunday at Oakmont shooting 63. I wasn't sure how much we were going to hear about that last year but I had plenty of barf bags just in case.

He obviously loves himself, which is just fine...but most of us get sick of hearing about how good he is...was...whatever.

I still say if he wants to talk about how "I'd do ___" or "I would have ___" then he should be out there doing it and not in the safety of the broadcast booth blathering on and on about circumstances that he may not understand 100%.

As a veteran I can say without a doubt I am not in the least offended.

Miller did not mean it as and insult , he was just drawing a comparison about being seperated from ones family. Maybe just maybe its a bad analogy but it was not meant as offensive. I think he just felt he understood how they felt.

You know I support our Military way more than a lot of people. But they are all volunteers they chose this way of life. Just as Johnny chose to play on the tour.

I mean please you do not join the military thinking well there will never be a war.

I seriously doubt most military people would be offended by Johnnys statment they have to much common sense.

Ah well - so you guys don't care for the MOST POPULAR golf announcer on TV today. No biggie. Not all of us care for Tiger Woods either. :black eye:

Frankly what I like best about JM is that he calls a spade a spade - no lame excuses that virtually ALL the other broadcasters use "Oops, guess he had a bad lie" :partytime2:

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha.

It's a free country. You're entirely free to make yourself look like an idiot if you like. :partytime2:

Bitter ? Angry ? Jealous ? Who are YOU ? Dr. Joyce Brothers ? :clapping:

I guarantee you NBC is thrilled to have the MOST POPULAR golf broadcaster on the air today, probably ever........ :black eye:
