Putter length

Putting is very personal and a variety of techniques have been used by many great putters.  A lot of great putters, however, share some common traits that you can copy to help determine length and lie of your putter.  Those traits are that the putter shaft is in-line or close to in-line with your trail forearm (right forearm for a right handed golfer) and that the eyes are over the ball or slightly inside.  You can check both of these on your own with a mirror or have someone check it for you. The example picture below is Tiger.  Great putter obviously but his set up is conventional and very similar to many great putters that came before and after.

In the past few years I've noticed more pros playing longer putters.  Guys like Ram and Theegala are playing 37" and there are a bunch of guys playing 36".  Bettinardi used to only offer up to 36" but just this year has option for up to 38".  I'm bringing this up just to point out that for years we had very limited options and there seems to be a growing trend towards more length.

I think it really just depends on what feels good for you, or probably more importantly, what gets the ball in the hole.

I'm 6'8 and I play a 42" armlock. That works perfectly for me, and I am so much more accurate with it than my older spider blade that its not even a competition. My father on the other hand hates the armlock, after putting regular for 30 years he just thinks it feels too weird.

I used to use a putter based on my uncle’s preference, it must have been around 24", it was years ago and just for casual play around our membership course.

I did find it quite unusual but putter ok with a blade putter at such a short, short length.

im not even sure that that length of shaft is legal or not these days either?

now I’m using my favourite putter (original 2 ball) at 34". And I’m 6"2.

You could try one of Pings Sigma adjustable putters to experiment. Can find one cheap used.

I’m 6 ft and use a 34”. I’ve tried a 35 but always felt no connection.. like the swing weight was off. Just go with whatever you’re comfortable with. You can always cut it down and add weight like others have mentioned.

Interesting as I'm 6'2" and all my putters (too many) are 35".  I've recently tried a couple of 36" putters and not sure I don't feel more connection with those.  I think the bigger issue for me though is having the right lie/loft for each

I’m 5’11” and play a 35” putter.  Always played a 34” but felt I was too hunched over and long practice sessions would cause my lower back to ache.

Going through this now with a new putter.

This is me. I am also 5'11" and I have played a 34 switched to a 35, went back to a 34 but am now going back to a 35 because I feel too slumped over with the 34 and can't practice for all that long either, before my back starts to tighten. The 34 I was playing had an added Arccos sensor on it, so it played like a 35 anyway(I'm not using Arccos anymore).

I’m 6’2” and roll 34” putters. I’ve tried 35” and 33”. Pretty sure 33.5” would be perfect for me, but I cycle through too many putters to customize each.

i like to bend over the putter head and ball to get a birds-eye view of the intended line. I use a SBST swing.
